Im having a problem,and its confusing the heck out of me. Im thinking fuel pump,but lets see what some of you say.

Backround info:
1967 Dart STOCK 225/904 84,000 miles on the clock, holley 1920(seems original) points ignition(replaced points,new plugs and new wires.Stock coil?)What appears to be the stock fuel pump.Stock exhaust,the muffler blew out and the whole front of the caseing fell apart,so I am running straight pipe that ends a foot before the axle(where the factory down pipe meets the muffler.).

Problem: She drives great around town at low speeds(up to 50 mph). But once I get on the highway and get up to speed(65-70 mph)she will cruise great for a little stretch then it will feel like the engine is shut off! Like I took the key out of the ignition.Then the engine will surge,and I have a tough time keeping her at 55 mph.She never dies,and after this little fit,I can cruise back up to 70 and it will start all over again. It also happens when going up a steep incline.By my house there is a big steep hill with a 50 mph speed limit,almost every time I go up it at speed this problem will happen.

I have set the timing all over the place.5 deg. 11 deg. 15 deg. initial,same problem,no better no worse. So I was thinking it must be the fuel system,or possibly the exhaust? Would lack of back pressure cause this?My only problem with this idea is that the car started doing this before the muffler fell off.But it wasnt as bad before,and the muffler was blown out anyway but still attached.....ok guys let the ideas flow.

Could be a fuel supply problem (clogged "sock" on the fuel pickup in the tank, weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter). Could very likely be a carburetor problem. Could even be a distributor problem! Won't matter for long if you don't put a real exhaust system on the car, pronto. Exhaust pipes that end under the car = serious risk of death by carbon monoxide poisoning; perhaps you'll take out some other road users when you go.

I know and I am trying to figure out a way to replace it.I lost another job due to the economy(this was my third job in 6 months)things arent good for me right now,no extra cash.The Dart is my only mode of transportation too.

The Dart is fixed and happy again! It was the pump. I cant believe my STOCK pump started to fail on me after only 43 years of service Good thing she is so pretty or I would have to trade her in on a new model....NOT

Tomorrow she is getting a bright red glasspak installed! No more fear of death by carbon monoxide Im not really one for the sound of a glasspak,but it beats straight pipe,and at only 15 bux new I can complain.
