I found these two pieces laying up against the #3 intake push rod in my "new" engine, I'm thinking maybe a PCV valve came apart at one time? I'm not sure what it is, any takers? the collar piece is plastic and the pintle looking piece is steel.

Nope, thats not an accelerator pump. When you say "new" engine, do you mean new to you or a freshly purchased reman? If it is a reman, I would suspect some kind of junk from the reman shop made its way into your motor post assembly.

Anti-siphon valve from a bong?

Not that I've ever seen one, you understand...

I appologize, no this isn't brand new or remanufactured, its a smooth running 77 I pulled out of a 71 pickup a friend is parting out. I don't know the history, all I know is it fired right up, ran smooth with no smoke.

The reason I believe it might be the plunger of an old PCV valve is because where I found it (#3 intake push rod) is by the edge of the baffle under the PCV valve hole. Also the head was covered in a crumbly mess, not just oily sludge. I wonder if it was driven w/out a working PCV valve for a time.

This is just speculation on my part right now. When I first saw them in the mess, my heart went to racing (I'm about ready to put it in my truck) but I don't recognize them. I looked up a diagram on line and it resembles it. though I can't figure out the plastic collar. Heres another pic and the diagram I found. also the shiny groove on the narrow end looks like it was worn there by the push rod.

Looks to me like the seat and plunger fell out of the PCV valve. Some PCV valves retain the seat by the metal cylinder being swedged over the seat. Looks like this one wasn't assembled very securely. There may also be a small spring floating around in the engine somewhere.

EGAD! hadn't thought of that, hopefully the spring had a big enough diameter to stay in the housing. There wasn't one in there and I don't imagine the spring to be small enough to go down in the engine. I had to swap oil pans and pick ups also, there wasn't anything there either. I vacuumed the junk out of the top of the head theres nothing hiding there.... The more I type the better feeling I have... Thanks guys.

I would look down the pushrods with a flash light to see if the spring is sitting on top of a lifter, mark

Do you have an old plastic PCV? smack it with a hammer and see what is inside! Give you an idea what size spring you are looking for.
