Hey Doc and others,

I am finishing my monster roadrace oilpan for Project V, and it looks like the stock '66-down pickup is not right for this thing. Puts the pickup too far back in the pan. The pan is a '64 pan lowered by 0.8" and widened on the pass side, but stock sump outline (long fore-aft, early type) is maintained on the very bottom.

I've been playing with a '67-up car pickup and bending it around for location. Anyone done this and have any comments?

I want to get the pickup (opening with screen) about in the center of the pan bottom and sitting right on the bottom, but pooched a bit toward the pass side where I have the wider section. I've been having trouble losing a bit of oil pressure on hard left turns on the track. Hard braking has been a problem in the past, but not with the '64 modified/baffled pan.

Oil will climb up the Slant of the engine on left turns, so putting the pickup that way should help. On right turns, oil should be partially driven down the Slant of the engine into the sump.

I have made a lot of custom pick-up over the years and never had any problems. If you are lengthening the tube, a good quality weld joint is the key to success.

You can also re-clock the bottom opening by prying the lip open,

Yep, I have one pried open. This job will likely not require that.

I lengthen mine using pipe thread nipples/unions and that has worked fine for me.

Since I turned a mid-sump pan into an elongated long rear-sump pan I had to lengthen the pickup tube to move the screen rearward in the pan. I was able to simply cut the existing tube near the screen and weld in some round tube stock. I beat on the pan a little for clearance too. I didn't have to resort to heating and bending the tube. I ground my welds to check for porosity and then sent it out to be hot tanked.

On the only two I ever modified..(from car to truck), one I brazed steel water pipe (3/8 inch) to make a longer tube, the other I soldered bendable copper tubing onto the end of steel tube cut from the screen. I liked the copper better because I could bend it right where need be. Takes a profane gas or acetylene torch, though.

rut-ro I don't think that this is going the way of an oil pickup....

not to jack the thread, but wouldn't a swinging pickup be the answer to the problem ? And couldn't you modify a stock pick up into a swinging one ? Should you stick with 3/8th or go 1/2 inch for the pick up tube diameter ?

In my wasted youth I did fluids engineering, lots of that with pump design and fluids delivery systems. With out getting too fancy about it, I suspect Mopar matched the pickup tubing diameter to oil fluid properties at room temp and at operating temp, then sized a pressure delivery and fluid pickup system all the way from sump screen mesh hole size to the hole in the head that oil comes from to rockers. A larger tube in pickup, because cross section varies as the 4th power of diam, may well result in oil not being picked up. A smaller size may result in oil being picked up too slowly. Given the price of the tubing compared to the price of an engine I never felt the need to experiment, but know that adding a few inches won't matter.

Moving fluids is a fascinating study area. Try an experiement your self....what is the largest diam. tubing you can use as a straw and still suck up water? Note how as diam increases you move from a simple pursed lip volume change inducing vacuum to one needing your whole diaphragm to move water up.

Rock, thanks for the fluids comments. I agree, the stocker will be fine.

I would love to do a swinging pickup that could swing 360 degrees. That would solve slosh problems. Does such a thing exist? Baffles help this slosh problem tremendously.
