What ya think about this, It popped in my head looking under the hood.
Does this seem like a good idea?.I was thinking of gutting the lean burn computer, and bolting the module in the shell( I take it as long as it is grounded to the alt. it should be fine) , and maybe running the wires out the sides , maybe securing them to the air cleaner, then down the air duct. That way it would look somewhat factory for visual inspections. Please give me your input, good or bad .

The HEI system is so small you can mount it almost anywhere. Use a plastic crayon box and mount it in the fenderwell. One of the few upsides to the lean burn system is that to hook the HEI up all you have to do is take a power feed from the (+) coil lead. Running it through a relay is a good idea, but not absolutely necessary.

Gutting the computer would be a very easy way to do this. You might even be able to use the factory (+) and (-) feeds for the lean burn system to power the HEI unit.

The HEI module needs a good heat sink - careful not to enclose it such that it cannot dissipate heat; it'll cook.

Hey Dan,
I have this for my heat sink


so the module is not flat against anything ,it has a little space inbetween( I have a nut in between the heat sink )
Thanks for you comments , with this heat sink , do you think it will work . This is not what I am definetly doing , just an idea .

You could mount it in the hollowed out computer hanging on the side of th air cleaner and drill holes on the outer and inner walls of the computer to allow air flow across the HEI unit.

GM mounted them IN the distributor,,,,,,,

GM did indeed mount them in the distributor - using the big aluminum distributor housing as a heat sink.

The engine does not draw air through the lean burn computer as was done starting in the '80s on the EFI computers mounted in the fenderwell (w/duct to the air cleaner).

Bear in mind the lean burn controlled the mechanical and vacuum advance.you will need a non-lean burn distributor,and a service manual so you can study where the extra wires go before you start cutting wires.

I was thinking , if I put it in the lean burn shell, and It "goes out", it will be difficult to replace out and about. I thought if I carry a spare already hooked up with wiring and put like bullet connectors on the end, and when I hook up the Hei module to my truck, I will use bullet connectors for easy temporary access to use a spare if I need one .
Is there any major voltage drop using the bullet connectors, and what do you think of that idea?

Don't forget that dab of silicone stuff under the module, it'll help disipate the heat

Something else to consider. The lean burn computer may do your voltage regulation and control your charging. Which can give you a problem if you just yank the lean burn out.( Im not sure with years did what but my 87 needs the computer to charge)
