How many of us have had one of those hand-to-forehead moments, the it-was-so-obvious and/or I-should-have-checked-that groan?
Between working 25ish hours a week combined at 2 jobs and 18 credits of classes plus some self-taught stuff on top of that, I haven't exactly had a whole lot of free time this past term. THOR was awesome enough to take my Volare in to his Advanced Fuels class's lab today, since he needed to work on something with a distributor and as some people may remember my Volare was having some odd idling problems for a while that neither of us could diagnose.
Apparently, my Volare's idling problem was stemming from two sources. A bit of a vacuum leak at the EGR valve we thought we had fixed was still there, and more importantly, the distributor cap's center node was fried, and the rotor was arcing.
Of course then I had one of those moments of duh, why didn't I check that first off? Oh right, cos I'd just replaced it a few months back (I think - my memory is shoddy at best right now for anything relevent after the 15th century) and apparently forgot that just cos it's (probably) new doesn't mean it's not defective in any way.
:?
Lesson learned: if your car is having problems, always check the simple, basic things first.

Very true.

I had a trainer at Hyster who was probably the most intelligent individual I have ever met. One thing he really, really stressed to us about diagnosing problems: When you're lost go back to sqare one and verify where you are. :D

The hard part to diagnosing problems is not forming an opinion of what is really wrong and trying to prove it instead of just diagnosing the problem.
