i should add the truck is a 83 dodge d-150 225 cid.The only numbers I can find on the Carb are 0-2543. I know it's a Carter and it said it was made in St. Louis. I also know it's a one bbl.

Has anyone seen/heard of this Carb? Does anyone know where I can get more information about it.

That is a Carter BBD two Barrel carb. Someone has installed a "Super Six" setup on your truck. See this article for more info about the Carter BBD and the "Super Six" package.

just wondering does the two barrel carb for the carter have serial numbers or does it just go by BBD , also in the third pic there is a round piece on the valve cover with a couple vacume lines in it any clue on what it is , and does this BBD have a high idle for cold morning starts. thanks for all the info so far

Once upon a time there was a red or green stamped aluminum tag that was screwed under one of the float bowl screws that gave the specific list number for your carb. This appears to be missing on your carburetor. If you are ordering a rebuild kit you should be able to get a generic Carter BBD kit that has all the gaskets you will need. You will have to be careful to match up the gaskets to the holes in your carb body though, since the kit will come with many extra gaskets for all variations of the BBD ever made.

The BBD does indeed have a fast idle cam and screw. They are on the driver's side of the carb and attach to the choke butterfly. Yours is clearly present in the first picture you posted. Do you see those two small screws that are behind that big screw on the side of the carb? The big screw is the screw that holds the fast idle cam on. The outboard small screw is the curb idle screw and the inboard small screw is the fast idle screw. See the odd shaped piece of metal held onto the side of the carb by that big screw? That is the fast idle cam. There is a rod that connects it to the choke butterfly which also appears to be present on your carb. When the choke closes that rod should pull the cam counter-clockwise, placing the inboard smaller screw on one of the steps of the cam. As the engine warms up, the choke opens, the cam rotates clockwise, and the screw move down to a lower step of the cam and eventually stops contacting the fast idle cam altogether. If your carburetor does not give you fast idle when it is cold, you need to adjust it.

The large circle with vacuum lines coming out of it is part of the EGR system. That is the EGR vacuum amplifier if I am not mistaken. If you have disabled the EGR valve than you may remove this device and the mess of hoses attached to it.

You should read that article I linked to earlier. It explains much more about how to adjust and tune the BBD.

Are you sure your truck is an 83? That looks to be a factory original installation, or one that has been one there a long time.

Welcome on the board. That appears to be a factory-installed Carter BBD two-barrel carb in your '83 — Reed, remember the 2bbl was available in trucks for a couple years after it disappeared from cars. The article Reed linked to goes into some detail on how to convert from a 1bbl to a 2bbl carburetor, but your truck already has a 2bbl. Carburetor operation and repair manuals (and some training movies) are posted here for free download. You should also definitely get the general manuals for your truck so you'll understand what all the parts are and how they work together. The item that looks like a hockey puck is called a "vacuum amplifier". It's part of your EGR system.

first thank you every body i can not explain the frustration it has been to find any one who even knows about a slant six. to REED im pretty sure its factory the guy i bought it from said it was a one barrel i guess he was wrong thank you for clearing that up for me. there are so many cut and rerouted vacum hoses it makes me cross eyed. thank you reed also for explaining the fast idle break down for me and will definetly look at your link more indepth. what i trully want to do is get ride of all the non essential vacum hoses so it looks cleaner . i did look at my vin and decoded it and it was supposed to come with a origional 1bbl i guess it had a mod put on. thank you for telling me about the carb tags. and the rebuild kit. now to SLANTSIXDAN thank you for helping me in my quest to find every thing about this rare but awsome carb and engine. i am also looking for a specific owners manual for my truck i know your a A body car guy but if you have any good links or sites. the only manual i could find is of course a vauge chilton manual. any help would be appreciated.

Don't remove vacuum hoses to achieve a particular "look" under the hood — each of those hoses is there for a reason, and there's no hard-and-fast definition of "essential". You'd best get a good understanding of what each hose and system does (what it really does, not what someone thinks he remembers his cousin's roommate's friend's grandpa saying it does) before you decide to eliminate anything. Do get those three books I linked to as quickly as you can; they're your key to a clear understanding of how your truck is built and how it's supposed to work. Once you understand how it's built and why it's built that way, then it becomes possible to make thoughtful choices about if and how to rework it.

This carburetor and engine are not rare, BTW; they're quite common.

What is your truck's VIN?

im down loading them right now. and you are right i shouldnt do some thing to get a look i guess bad choice of words. i want to organize it better so it doesnt look like a (charlie foxtrot) *cluster &#@%* and there is a great manual but its 90 bucks :shock: but i need it so its money well spent.
i guess im just getting confussed cause i hardly see people talking about SL6 IN 83 guess they went out of style in that time. in the dodge truck. thanks again slantsixdan

Okay, that does indeed say your truck was built with a 225-1bbl (if the 8th character were an "M" rather than an "H", it would have been a factory 2bbl. Are you sure it's not an H?

The slant-6 was available in Dodge trucks and vans thru 1987.

yeah its a H
man its gonna get crazy trying to figure everything out. im not to versed on carbs. and plus my engine seems to have horrible issues with power and very very rough idleing. and when i switch to drive or reverse. oh well thats a nother topic i just have to figure out what to work on first. there is a lot of troubleshooting steps for rough idle. dont know what to take first. thanks for your help .

Mine was like that. When I got it, someone had hacked their way through the emission controls willy-nilly without any reason or plan. In the end I just had to get rid of all of it because to fix it back properly with the lean burn was a fool's chase. I had more vacuum leaks in all those hoses than not.

Get the manuals and your favorite beverage and have fun reading before you ever turn the first wrench.

yeah did you end up repairing and putting every thing back after you read all your manuals. its going to be a long crazy journey thanks for every thing.
