The water has to flow through the block before it comes up through the large transfer passages at the back of the block. Some also flows through the holes below the exhaust valves. If the big hole at the front of the block were let open most of the coolant would bypass the block and head.

Thought as much -

Is there any info that can be gained from the casting numbers on the head?

I notice that the head does not have the casting dot... which means it has the revised combustion chamber if I understand Doug's article correctly

BTW the valve springs are green in colour ...ideas on this?

Do you know where your engine was cast? I'm wondering if your casting numbers would correspond to US or Mexico casting numbers or not. Good pictures are probably best for identifying pertinent features.

The valve springs were probably color coded according to use, but unless we find someone that worked the assembly line back then the specific color and application may never be known.

Will take them tomorrow - as we had it the blocks where cast over here - local content by weight issue but stuff was imported as well

BTW my chamber volume is 59cc
the volume above piston at tdc is 29cc

I need the gasket diameter and compressed thickness to finish my current calculation please :?

The 225 I pulled out of a 71 d100 has the 5 plugs & extra ribbing- BF casting.
The valve springs on it are green as well, dunno if this helps or not.
