My front bench is completely slaughtered on the driver's side now, so I'm thinking I"ll have to bump up the reupholstering for it so I can comfortably drive it this summer. I have yet to look into how much it'd cost, but what's you guys' opinions on using velour for a bench?

As a fan of 70s era custom vans, I also am a fan of velour, tuck and roll, button tuck, gorilla fur, etc.... I think a velour bench seat would be comfortable and quite stylish.

IMO? NFG. Velour just ain't right for a car made before about 1977 or so, and it was not used in A-bodies (pretty sure not even in the Brougham/SE models).

Unless you get carried away (leather), the material cost is small compared to the labour cost of having good upholstery work done. And bad upholstery work is false economy, for it doesn't hold up well at all and pretty soon you're back where you started. See my thread here.

I think velour would bring a bit of a classy look to my old Duster. Just a touch of luxury in an otherwise no-nonsense car. There are a couple upholstery shops around here that I'm going to check out. They both seem to have a good reputation, so I'm going to go to each and see what all they do when they redo a bench seat and what their processes are. Also how well they stand behind their work. I'm planning a design very similar to what you had done for your seats. A bit darker shade of red, and my front seat has the vertical and fore/aft "ribs" in the upholstery (which I want the new upholstery to have as well). It'll definitely be nice to sit on a new, freshly upholstered seat, whichever material I go with.

Just think- these days there is really cheap LED rope lighting and light-up tape that could be used to trim it out.

The wife and kids surprised me one year by having my Valiant seats upholstered in red velour. I had quietly been planning to get and recover some buckets for the front and recover the rears to match. Turning down a present like that would have had repercussions, so velour benches it is. Nothing fancy, and it fit the car well enough. At least they fixed the broken springs. Oh, and I don't slide like I might on vinyl. Velour can be grippy.
A few years later, and the red is badly faded on the upper seat edges where the sun hits. And I'm thinking about buckets again ...

An interesting bit of trivia about Escape From New York: The only way John Carpenter got Donald Pleasance to play the US President was to tell him that the president was the love child of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

I love that movie. 80s era John Carpenter movies are awesome. Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Litlle China, great stuff.

I should note that the gold plated Cadillac is a diffrent Cadillac from the purple and zebra stripe interior Cadillac.

I was a teenager in the 70s. That look (Caddy) was ugly then and it still is. (although I can appreciate the effort)
