Ahh.
Dutra Duals keep us from dealing with headers in street driven vehicles.

We get all kinds of benefits using his wonderful devices when pulling trailers full of barbeque grills and spare parts for fellow /6'ers over the pass. Iron is your friend if your going to torture your mill, then race it.
Or go to the market and pick up a dozen eggs.

Iron doesn't complain as much. I run Dutra Duals. They kick ass on a single. They sound cool! When motor heads look under the hood, they say stuff like, "Ooohhhh. That's cool!"

Headers that are properly set up will kick butt at the strip. I can drive my Dutra's there with no worries. It's iron. It's like worrying about an anvil. Headers might do the deed, but it might blow green gunk in your face.

If your gonna daily drive your rig, get iron. Much less hassle. If your going to trailer your lace panty butt to the strip, do something else.

I run headers on ALL of my cars! So do my brothers/friends etc... no problems at all. Daily driven, beat to snot, NO PROBLEMS!!!

My uncle tows his big ass streamline house on wheels(did I mention its BIG?) with a 87 Dodge PU with a 360 and HEADERS.Been towing it every year since 87 when he bought it new and slapped on a aluminum 4 bbl intake and a set of headers! 177,000 miles NO PROBLEM!

On the other hand I cant even begin to tell you how many people I know whos cast iron exa. manifolds crack...and crack....and leak...and CRACK! After having to replace the crappy cast iron manifold on my slant twice,I went headers and never looked back! I drive my car like a man,not a gentleman, and have not had a single problem with headers...ever.

Iron doesnt complain as much

So what's your point?

I've run headers in various applications too. With pretty good results. Not long term results, but if your running headers, that isn't expected, is it?

I don't understamd the big ruckus. They both have their place. Just like 2.93 gears as compared to 3.91 gears. 1 bbl carb to 2bbl to 4bbl. All depends what you are trying to accomplish. There is no one right answer.

I run headers, because my cars are mainly drag cars, and the headers are lighter (can't say if they are quicker, never compared). If I were doing a mainly daily driver, I would go Dutra duals.

If there coated you'll have long term results.

Hmmm ... I wonder what the ratio of cast manifold to tubular headers on the road is ...

Cracking stock manifolds on slant sixes are often related to bad installations. It's a long casting, with somewhat picky fastener specs. Oddly enough, my '64 has 280,000+ miles on the stock manifold. No problems.

I've never heard of a Dutra casting cracking, not that it couldn't happen.

Personally, every car I've dealt with that had headers for more than a year eventually had difficulties, leaks, or other issues. Most of the time, that was OK with the owner - part of the fun! If I were out for ultimate performance with some compromise in driveability and durability, I'd consider headers. I'd be even more interested if there was a readily available set that didn't cause ground clearance or other fitment problems in my car.

i was talking to a buddy of mine who makes headers and asked him if he ever thought about making headers for early A body /6's he wasn't sure if there is a market for it or not. so not to step on any toes just asking if there is a market for it? i've posted his sight before, "on the ground performance" he does great work and is curious if he should look into it, so what do you guys think?

It is all a matter of selling price...
I think Clifford gets about $400.00 for their headers these days... if your friend can produce a better design for less $$$ and provide better service, he would sell some sets.

Here, lemme roll your eyes back across the floor to ya...catch! *rolls*

I have never, ever said DDs are categorically better than headers. It's all about context; for most street-driven cars, DDs are a better choice because they are better matched to the service application. Since most enquiries along the lines of "Where can I get headers for a slant-6?" are asked in the context of improving a street-driven car, and not in the context of building a race car, my frequent answer is "Dutra Duals are better." That's all.

On a side note- for all small blocks headers have been a wear part, as in the bends crack and such. This is based on both 340 Challenger and 302 Stang. The other comment Dan made a while back was they are not tuned, which is another good point. I have to say that headers are probably a better choice for performance, but if the only way to get them is to give Clifford money than I will send Doug a check anyday. Last time I check they were $225, and maybe $100-200 for simple exhaust set-up at a shop would be a great improvement for street.
To answer Bret's coincidence, is that the ceramic coating on headers are said to cool your engine bay by 400deg (max). So perhaps the coated headers lowered engine temps leading to a cooler air charge being entered?

Thank you dan, i appreciate your advice. I already ordered the clifford headers last week, but i am still interested in split manifolds. My problem is two, even three or four different stories are being told to me,

My brother is very knowledgable at cars and has been working on cars his whole life, thus making me believe what he says. He tells me headers are fine, and that they arent that much of a problem if you do it right, (he says double up on STOCK ehaust manifold gaskets, not the ones clifford provides.)

Then i have you people like you persuading me towards DD's. I am very interested because i know that the stock exhaust manifold has potential if modified, and im sure they do work better for street applications rather than headers.

Then i have people like brencuda, someone i have never meet, telling me that headers fit fine on his car, although it isnt a-body. Im just really confused and am trusting my gut feeling
