Bren's car is an A-body, it's just an unsuccessfully-built one that doesn't meet any of Bren's big expectations.

How much experience does your brother have with Slant-6 engines in particular? This is the key point — for most engines on the road, the options are stock manifolds or headers, period. The Dutra Dual option is unique to the Slant-6, so it's not unreasonable that your brother wouldn't know anything about it if he's not a slant-6 expert. His advice on gaskets might apply well to other engines, but in the case of a slant-6 it is not good advice — the stock slant-6 intake/exhaust manifold gaskets, no matter which brand you buy, are difficult to make seal well and durably. Whether you wind up with DDs or headers, it is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head (and with DDs, the intake-to-exhaust) junctions.

If you're having trouble deciding which way to go, make up your mind as to how you intend to use the car (street driver? race car?) and take a look back thru this thread. Read thru the opinions and arguments presented, and give appropriate weight to them given your intended use of your car. "Headers are better on the race track" and "Headers aren't that much of a problem on the street" don't argue very convincingly for using headers on a street-driven car, but they do argue very convincingly for using headers on a race car.

I know, I know, i have looked through this many times. I wouldnt really say im building a race car, but it isnt exactly a daily driver workhorse. I want more top end power, thus im looking for headers, overall a higher rpm and speed. I dont want it for when im sitting at a light and am trying to race that really corny dude in the civic :lol: !!! I want it more so on the freeway, my car really lacks in top end acceleration.

And as you said, you are right, my brother doesnt have advanced knowledge in the slant six area, closest thing he knows alot about is inline 6 chevy's, which he has modded quite a few. He is mostly knowledgable in V8's, which mine is not. It's too late now, but i will not throw out the idea of split manifolds once these headers wear out.

One thing that may help in the future to limit your number of answers:

Make it a prerequisite that answers about headers only come from people who have at this time a running Slant car with headers in it. That will weed out about 90% of the answers you get. :lol:

Wouldn't it also weed out those who tried and didn't like the headers, and went to something else? :wink:
And those who did their homework and decided against headers for their particular application?

BTW, the original question was more about doing business with Clifford.

It will also weed out those with an agenda, those who have never owned any vehicle with a set of headers in it but seem to know everything about headers, those who read about headers in a book once and decided they suck, and those operating on outdated and incorrect information.

Bottom line is that Clifford is and has always been a crapshoot.

There are other sources for Clifford headers if you are patient. I have owned at least 6 sets of them and only the set I have in my red car came from Clifford.

The "For Sale" section on this and any other Mopar board is a good place to start, as well as Craigslist and E-bag.

I bought my set from them when Jack was still very much alive and involved with the business. It was still a crapshoot.

Well its been two weeks since i ordered the headers and they are on a ups truck being shipped right now. Should be here by monday.. So as for waiting a month or three months as some claim, i dont think so. Now i gotta wait and see if they are "mangled" or damaged when they get here.

Well after exactly 3 weeks my headers from clifford arrived today, and all i can say is wow. My headers are flawless, no warped flanges or shotty worksmanship, AND they arrived sooner then i thought they would. As for all these horror stories about them taking 3 months, or sending out warped and damaged products, not for me.

i got a deal on my headers i got them used with an aluminum supersix manifold and clifford valve cover for 175 so it wont to bad but if you could go used cliffords but i think the split manifold would do just fine if you cant

one other thing headers can warp and leak the dura split manifold wont leak i think

Im just waiting on the install until next week, so when i get paid i can take my car to the exhaust shop. I was just wondering from someone who has run dual exhaust from their slant, if i should run a x pipe or just 2 pipes straight back from the headers?

Y it into a single pipe,and depending on cam/carb/comp.,a 2 1/4 to 2.5" diameter should fit the bill.

I have always run the Y pipe on mine and single exhaust.

My buddy has duals on his Dart, and it makes it a real PITA to work on anything on that side of the motor/trans. :?

I read all 5 pages of this and have the same question, sort of. I have a brand spankin' new 2" exhaust with Smithy's mufflers on my truck. True duals all the way. Waiting until I recover from surgery (getting my ankle screwed back together) to get he slant up and running, but the plan is dual Dutra duals and a Motorcraft 2100. Stock `84 otherwise. Is this thing gonna fly, or be a dog? Or doesthe exhaust past the manifolds matter?

Dual Exhaust doesn't hurt you in performance, but won't live as long. Moisture is your enemy.
Your performance will only be effected if you make your primary tubes too big, and loose velocity, thus loosing scavenging for your exhaust valve.
If your street driving it, consider doing a modified rear.

If your racing it, do whatever your build will support! :lol:

I need to wrap my Head pipes off my Dual Dutras for two reasons:
Under hood heat reduction, and to improve scavenging.
I built with 2-1/4" Head pipes. They are really tight on the mini'starter. Really, really tight. Stick with 2".
