How quick/fast have you been able to get your one barrel equipped Slant Six in the 1/4 mile?
I am going to keep racing the Valiant with it's stock holley for another season...so far 17.866 @ 75.32 MPH has been it's best. Race weight with driver is 2855 Lbs for my '72 Valiant with 904 trans...recent best MPH was after a valve lash adjustment of .011 & .021 . I feel like I have to break into the 80ish MPH realm before changing intake and exhaust. Thanks for your input and ideas, nico

That's not bad! What have you done to the car?

People have gone surprisingly fast with a 1bbl carb/intake.

I believe the Slant 6 demigod Mike Jeffrey has had his V/SA stock eliminator '80 Diplomat into the high 14s or very low 15s with a Holley 1945 carb, and Phil Marvetz in Oregon (?) has been in the low/mid 15s with some sort of 1bbl.

Keep in mind these are racecars with everything lightened and optimized and lots of internal engine work.

If you can get into the 16s, that is very impressive. Even 17s is very good for a 1bbl Slant.

Just attention to detail.... fuel line mod, recommended NGK's, valve lash, fresh rebuilt holley with 57 jet, and still ingesting through the stock air cleaner but with a K&N filter. It likes timing at about 3 degress BTDC. It has synthetic fluids in the entire drive train and no more electric fan, installed an a/c 7 blade fan with bigger radiator SO it's definately more of a drag than the original 4 blade fan...took a step backwards on this,.
When I go to the strip I open the exhaust cut out (still running the 1 3/4 inch pipe on the street) and I pump up the front tires to 50PSI. I am running 2.76 gears with 195/70-14 tires. I let the trans shift itself. It's a low miles car at 51,000....... Next, I think electronic ignition and I should try a distributor recurve, and back to the 4 blade fan should get me a couple more MPH.......Wonder if also adding 3.23 gears would help to get me there? 80 MPH that is.. I know I'm not breaking any new ground here just having fun tinkering with this Slant...Nico

That's great for being as stock as it is. 3.23 gears will help the ET, but do next to nothing for the MPH. 5 MPH more is quite a bit and will require more horsepower.

Not bad at all! I would recommend going to a 2 1/4-2 1/2 exhaust and electronic ignition (HEI) with a recurved distributor before doing anything els.e You are getting some really good performance from that stock slant!

Huh. OK, I guess that makes sense. Still impressive.

Marvetz was running a 1bbl, AFAIK.

Back in the mid 1970's, my legal stock eliminator car was turning mid 16's.
65 Valiant 2 door post with a 170/904/3.91 7 1/4. Car weight 2530 lbs. We had to be more stock in those days then now. I think Meril Brunner was also running mid 16's at that time.

What is the K&N part number for a filter that fits in the stock housing?

A 1 barrell doesn't flow enough air for a K&N to matter........

At what rpm is it shifting itself?? You may pick up some time by shifting manually later for some higher revs......Just a thought.

A paper filter can flow more air than the carb.

So going to a K&N which flows better doesn't really improve much because the bottleneck in the system is the carb, not the filter.

I understand that the carb is the main bottle neck in the system. But ANY air filter is a restriction,as opposed to no air filter. So why would a free(er) flowing filter offer no benefit? I think there would be a little benefit in mpg. I will give it a try and keep some records and report back if any change.

The main reason I like the K&N filters is the reusability factor.I have noticed economy and HP gains in other vehicles. Was worth 4.5 hp on the Dyno in my SRT-4 over stock paper filter.
