Forgot to mention: 20" HG from the choke pull-off at high revs, but of course I can't get it to idle so....

Another long shot, but im running out of ideas w/o hearing it. Assuming you have an electronic ignition, have you checked reluctor/pick-up gap in the dist? Should be .008"--use a brass feeler gauge.

How low can you bring the rpm's down before it dies? And is one or more cylinders misfiring? Any idea which ones or is it "random". Random suggests fuel delivery probs (rebuild carb) Constant misfiring by one or more cylinders suggests either bad plugs, wires, or something internal in the dist. (would say rings too, but you said the compression test checked out OK)

Mind is still churnin.....

THANK YOU to everyone who helped me troubleshoot this thing. And the winner was: REBUILD CARB!! It was a fuel issue, and I did a carb rebuild and put her back together and it runs just great. Lots of little black crusty bits came out in the wash.

Question: There is a vacuum hose going from the carb (Carter BBD) to the valve cover, and the inlet from it was really gunked up. I think thats where the problem came from. Is there any way to prevent this from happening in the same way again?

Thanks again. On the road for Seattle!

zac

I'd say to get a new PCV valve. Glad you're running well again.

i was wondering if you found out anything to fix your problem. I just posted the same problem and have already done EVERYTHING. If you figured it out, I would love a reply. I am still stuck. Tks, John

I just went thru a similar thing on my 89 Dip ex squad (edelbrock manifold, Carter AFB, Jacobs ign. system, headers, true duals, no cats)
completely de-Lean Burned. Charcoal canister blew up, pass side float got completely packed in with charcoal (looked like full of coffee grounds)thru bowl vent, only ran on 4 cyls, 318's run real weird like that. I'm talking floored, 45 mph. A rebuild and some jet/metering rod experiments along the way, and its running as good as ever again.
