I am putting together an emergency kit to be kept in my '76 Volare for those rare occasions that something just might fail. That said, what headlight would you purchase for the car? I've already checked the Rock Auto catalog and they show four headlights ranging from an OE Type replacement for $3.63 all the way up to a Wagner brand for $17.63. Price isn't my major concern here. Reliability and quality are much more important. Thank you for any recommendations you might make.

My recommendation, especially if price is no object, is to go to www.danielsternlighting.com or send SlantSixDan a PM. He can fix you up with the best lights you can get for your car.

Thanks, Reed. JG, If you want really good headlamps, see this thread and this site and shoot me an e-mail. If you don't want to sink any significant money or effort into it and just want to know which ordinary headlight to buy, the only sealed beams worth buying are the GE Night Hawk items, which like all sealed beams aren't super terrific, but are at least reasonably well made on reasonably new tooling. Everything else on the sealed beam market is sloppily-made junk, no matter how hyped up with "purer, whiter, cleaner light!" nonsense. List prices are ridiculous on the Night Hawks, but amazon.com has them on permanent sale for $20 apiece, just put in the applicable number (H6024NH for one large round headlamp per side, H6054NH for one large rectangular on each side, etc.) See also this thread for other (non-headlight) upgrades.

hi gents, i am trying to replace the high and low headlights on my 62 valiant signet. can you advise which nighthawk part numbers i should input on the amazon site?

perhaps later i will take on the project of upgrading the lights per the thread suggestions, if that is worthwhile.

another small question, i have leaking issues in the driver side window that i can only resolve by keeping the car covered. any suggestions?

gcb

There aren't any Night Hawk headlamps for the quad 5¾" round headlamp system. See this thread for some discussion of quad-round sealed beams until/unless you're ready to put in really good headlamps like I have on my '62.
The wiring on '62s is pretty pathetic; upgrading it will not only make the headlamps work better but also reduce the risk of an electrical "incident" (i.e., fire).

Where exactly are you getting a leak?

Dan, i ordered headlight bulbs from candlepower as you suggested. they are original stock tungstens, which your post recommend as best for the oem relays. hopefully this old 62 has such relays, i guess i will find out soon.

i am going to pursue your suggestion to fit relays at the headlights. do you recommend a manufacturer or part? i saw you trash cheap relays, great point and what else am i going to see at autozone but cheap chinese stuff, but wonder what dual 87 relay you might suggest would be effective.

the leak on the driver's side. it comes in around the window, mainly to the carpet behind the driver seat. of course i worry about rust with something like this.

yes i got a photo traffic ticket for doing 56 in a 45 in the 62 valiant on I-395 in downtown DC. i don't know if the 12 cars passing me at 70mph got tickets or not.

H'mm. How? Did you call them up? What exactly did you order? The current-production #4040 sealed beams are not what you want.

No. As described in the links, there are no headlamp relays. As stated in my previous post in this very thread, the stock headlamp wiring is poor. All the headlamp current runs through long, thin wires and tiny contacts in the headlamp and beam selector switches. You need to add relays per the article I linked to.

Uh...again, follow the links!
