You know this car has been shown all over the board and I can't believe I haven't posted it as a 'project' in the Slixer's area (I guess it's doing it's job as the rolling laboratory)...

Anyhow, I guess I will continue logging upgrades here...

Just got it back from a shop in town that is reputable and actually can do an alignment without goofing things up... (when they fired it up to move it, I guess everyone had to go over to check out 'my smallblock' and then look again and see the 'healthy' slant six... 8) ...)

Current upgrades:

New front rotors, semi metallic brake pads, and remanf calipers (no new ones... and remanfs now only come with phenolic pistons...)
All shock replaced with KYB gas adjusts
Front Torsion bars upgraded from 890/891's to 892/893's (I can stand on the bumper and it doesn't 'dip' under my weight)
New bushings and ball joints, 11/16" tie rods, full alignment
Firmfeel 24:1 steering box...
New clutch (Zoom, brand...B&B style 9 1/4")
Regasket the motor after 51,000 miles, inspect for wear and cam walk/oil pump gear issue...
Driver's side rear axle seal was weeping, so had the shop replace both sides bearings and seals, while doing the alignment...

It handles so differently now that the steering and suspension are overhauled (it's much tighter)...

Tomorrow, new Yokohama tires and readjust the clutch and change the jetting in the carb a bit....

-D.Idiot

p.s. Midi kept saying "it sounds like a V-8, it feels like a V-8... but it's a slant six...I like it!".... Gotta stop giving rides in this car, it keeps addicting the riders with more mid-range torque and power....

No, you must continue giving rides... you know why? Because I havent had one in that car yet!!!! Glad to hear that you got it driveable now. I'll be hoping to get a ride on friday when I come by with my car.

The real reason you should continue to give rides, is to give the rest of us something to work towards, if we all had stock stuff... well wheres the fun in that?

Today I decided to go take a cruise down to Eugene and back (slumming for distributor cores to recurve and refurb)...

The duster handles great with the suspension mods (no pinball between the lines... and only minimal interference when there were ruts in the pavement...).

I also decided to swap over to a carb I had 'stashed' away after I came home from Iraq... I know the Hpak duster gets good power and milege from the 390 cfm holley, the 600 cfm holley with annualar boosters got V-8-esqe mileage but the power was good... so I decided to try and make a 'Weapon-X' compromise carb... Holley 0-1848 450 cfm Carb (for F$%d)... traded out the front boosters for a set of annular downleg boosters, added quick change secondary pod, modified for manual choke (for better cold weather manners)...

I'll need to bump the idle bleed down a smidge and the main bleed down a notch, but it stands up and runs good... so far mpg 13.5 city, 21.5 highway...(about as good as the 390... much better than the 600...)...

My buddy can't make Medford in May, so Hpak duster and I will be going, and Beater Valiant will be staying behind this time...

more later,

-D.Idiot

Did your buddy drive BV down to eugene for you? Let me know when you are going and for how long, and if you like I'll see if I can drive it there for you.

Well I've been driving the beater valiant for quite a while now, and it's been doing OK, but the 9" brakes are not new, and the steering is getting a bit more loose (I love following the 'groove' in the roads...really.)

Autopsy of the Hpak motor shows the bottom end is still good and intact but the headgasket failed on fire ring for #4...which probably is why the leakdown test for that cylinder sounded from the lifter gallery and I mistook it as sounding like it came out of the oil pan....

So I'll pull the block for something later....
Saturday morning I'll be dropping my 'next build' off at
my 'bread and butter' machine shop as they aren't busy
(in fact they really perked up when I said I had an engine to
do...so they must be bored doing flywheel resurfacing all day...)

Current projections will be:
1963 Yellow Dodge Truck Block
peeling .106 off the deck to make it about .055 down in the hole
.040 over pistons and moly rings
Recondition stock rods new ARP rod bolts.
Since I have a couple pre-67 cranks that I can't use, I
traded one off for a recon'd 1968+ crankshaft .010/.010
Using my last Mopar Perfomance roller chain timing set up
Erson "Lou Special" cam ground with a slightly wider LSA, and
ground 4 degrees advanced-overlap for use with Hpak intake
and street manners
Reusing my oversize valve head
ARP head studs and nuts

Compression Ratio Target about 10.2:1 SCR, calcs
indicate depending on actual measurements after machining
about 7.9-8.09:1 DCR...so this guy might run OK on a little less
timing and maybe 'plus' at the pump...

We'll see how this one goes...Computer Dyno Sims show that it
produces less low/mid range torque, but is perfect when the Hpak
starts to ram-tune (and the torque band is 'flat' between 3500-5000
rpm...which is where the A-833OD ends up after shifting up...)

More in a week or two...
:)

I certainly hope he can make at least 1 of the 2 races at Woodburn this year... I want to see what that car can do!

I promised to make Medford this year... so that's one, we'll see about a Woodburn race and scheduling, at the moment I have enough going on my plate that engine building will only happen on the weekend...

Here's the assembled block sans the head...

Image

This is not a porcupine...but with 10.21:1 static compression it was where I needed to go....

Image

The engine is so confused with a 1963 truck block (yellow), head/oil pan/ valve cover from a 1974-1976 car....after looking at the paint samples and being a graduate of U of O, I decided yellow-blue tie-die block would be fun (and visually confusing to the V-8 guys....wish I had used the John Deere head then I'd have all the primary colors...LOL).

Cheers!

The better pics are from the past, the paint job is fading after about 9 years of weather and abuse. Using the search function you'll find pics I had posted back in 2000/2001 when I put it back together sans any badging.
