My rebuilding of a carter BBD came to a halt before I opened the parts package. After reading posts here I looked carefully at the throttle shaft and there is some play between the bores for the shaft and the shaft. I took it apart and there is wear on the shaft itself. I suspect there is wear on the plate bores as well but why would the shaft have worn?
Is the shaft available by itself? I can machine & bush the plate but I don't want to make the shaft-I don't think it would be worth the effort.
I'm also not aware of any rebuild outfit that I trust or any reman carbs from the parts houses. Anyone have any luck-w-a remanufacturer/rebuilder?

The shaft wears because grit gets between it and the throttle body. You size and ream the new bushings in accord with the (actual) diameter of the shaft. Hope you marked the positions of the throttle plates relative to the shaft before removal, for that's important to retain correct operation of the idle transition circuit and vacuum advance.

I'm sorry to have to ask what might be an obvious question but where the shaft is worn, as you pointed out, is at the three spots it contacts the bottom plate so this is the smallest diameter of the shaft. So when you say bush the plate to the "actual diamet of the shaft" are you assuming the shaft is going to be resized so it is the same diameter for the whole length? Right now it has three worn areas so , of course, bushing the plate to the greater diameter of the shaft would result in play due to the location of the worn areas being right where the bushings are.Going to a bushing that is the size of the worn area of the shaft obviously will not allow the shaft to go back in the plate.

It's not very common to find a throttle shaft with more than just minor surface wear on it. If yours is seriously ground down, start with a different throttle body in less-battered condition, or weld up and turn down the shaft to recondition it.
