It won't idle cold or hot... The timing chain is a bit loose, and should probably be replaced. I get around 4 degrees crank movement before the rotor moves.

Here are the plugs, #1 on the right.

I am going to get new ones right now, these are shot... but to be honest, the ones that aren't covered in crap and rust, actually look fine.

Far as the lash goes, I know there are some that are definitely loose, but I haven't been able to get it running steadily enough to have a vacuum gauge do me any good, so I can't tell if any of the intakes aren't closing properly, I know the exhaust is fine because I don't get any pfft pfft out of the tailpipe, not even when it's trying to die.

Ok, so after replacing the plugs, I found my vacuum leak... throttle shaft on my "rebuilt BBD by Holley" is toast.

I swapped back to the other carb, and got the same thing, except it is leaking through a body gasket somewhere, so I may just swap the bottom ends and see where I end up. Both need to come apart so I can make 1 good one.

Anyone have a 350 CFM holley for cheap? Or maybe just a 2280?

The wierd thing is that for about 20 seconds after I really revved the engine, the vacuum leak went away, so it is being pulled together and sealing up, then as the vacuum drops, it comes back apart... grrrr... I think I've made it to the core issue here, and I will know for sure tomorrow.

:x

I fixed it!!!!

Turned out that the idle circuit was not being fed fuel, so I dismantled the BBD, cleaned the hell out of it (some rust and other critters hiding in there... ) reinstalled it (this is the one that came with the car, the "new" one had bent metering rods, amongst other issues) and voila! It runs!

Actually, it runs very well indeed, I am at school right now getting ready to do the rest of the maintenance it needs.

Lack of fuel to the idle circuit was the key, and it explains why it did all of the things it did. So for future reference, if you have the same issue, check this thread!!!

Yay!

My '74 Satellite Sebring Plus did the exact same thing. I tossed the 2bbl for a 625 Carter and Edelbrock Performer intake. The Performer was 26 lbs lighter!

For some reason, my cars never STAY fixed for long...

I got a good one today!

Driving to Portland, my rear passenger brake shoes decided to stick themselves to the drum, and do all sorts of hot stuff. Long story short, I had to wait until the drum cooled... which took almost 45 minutes then *pop*... the real problem being that something happened in there and it lunched my axle seal... :x

I figured that I could make it back to Salem (I was just south of the Terwilliger Curves, so about 35 miles) so I drove off the exit, around the top of the over pass, and then back down to the freeway. As I drove, I was noticing that the rear end was making some noise. I continued driving, trying to get home.

About 20 miles from home, I decided to pull off into a truck stop and crawl under the car to see if there was anything blatantly wrong... and there was... the entire inside of the drum, and inner side of the tire/wheel were covered in gear oil... CRAP!!!

At this point, the rear was pretty much out of lube, so I drove slowly on the side of the freeway still trying to get home. I pulled off into a gas station 10 miles north of Salem to let the rear end cool down, and I managed to jam my shift linkage a bit, so I had to jump out while it was raining, and sort it out, which took all of 30 seconds... poor me!

Got that fixed, let the car sit for a bit longer, then drove until I saw the Keizer exit, and drove to Schucks where my buddy Henry works. I ordered a new wheel bearing and axle shaft seal for the one side, until I can afford to go through the whole rear, assuming that it is savable.

I drove carefully from Keizer to my apartment in N. Salem. The rear end sounded like it was popping a bit, due to having a severe lack of the special sauce bath it likes to live in. The parts should be in Saturday, so I will get it back on the road probably Monday, when I am in class.

If it's not one thing, it's another!

Now I need to track down 2 other things:

1. Weird tapping noise I get at anything above about 2k RPM,

2. Idle vibration that goes away when I press the clutch in.

More fun for me!
