I recently bought a 65 Barracuda from a friend and I would like your honest opinion about the slant build he has done.

Block has been decked .100
Head has been shaved .040, fully ported with 1.77/1.44 valves
Ported valve reliefs
Erson cam with 270 Duration (RV15m) I havn't looked up lift yet.
Bored .030
Pistons are .040 in the hole.
It is a 74 block with less than 500 miles on it since the work has been done.
2bbl Holly 350
It has a GM HEI.
Boss Hogg 3300 stall Torque Converter.
Fiber glass fenders and hood
11.75" Discs from a 85 Diplomat on the front.
LBP 8 1/4 rear with 3.53 gears
Front end has been rebuilt with poly bushings
It has an Electric fan controlled by a thermostat
lash set at .022

She is a little rough around the edges. But mechanically she is outstanding. This thing pulls as hard as the 318 I had in the Duster.
I am really shocked and pleasantly surprised

Sounds like a good combo, I think if you are running headers or bigger
exhaust, ditching the 350 cfm 2-barrel for a 390 cfm 4 barrel would
probably make you wonder if the 318 was back under the hood...

That sounds like a very well thought out combination with room to grow.

Looks (and sounds) like a thoughtful combo. About the only thing that makes me go "H'mmm" is the torque converter, which sounds like its stall speed is really high (higher than necessary, maybe higher than desirable). This would probably be masked to some degree by the 3.5 rear axle, depending on tire size. I like that the previous owner upgraded the stop-power, not just the go-power. Does this engine run well on regular gas, or does it require high-test?

It seems to run just fine on 87. I think the guy I bought it from was a member here so you guys probably helped him think this thing through.

How many horses do you think this little beauty is puting out? 150?

Here is a pic of the car.

That would be 'moderate' it might be slightly higher but in the ball park....

You can always run out and do a 1/4 mile and reverse calc the ET for your power...

Looks like a great buildup. Drive, tune, enjoy...

If it's a Boss Hogg converter, it probably only stalls around 2500 on the Slant, which would be perfect.

350 carb can more than handle that buildup. I would leave it. Seymour has gone 14s with his 350 carb.

That car is set up in a very similar fashion to mine.

I think you could be at 175hp.

Thats enough carb for that setup. I would do the exhaust before going to a bigger carb.

Make it handle!

Dont worry about rough around the edges. I think thats a killer look.

I would run the 390 as well, the 4 barrel just seems to have more tun ability and economy at that size.
For the cam I would run something like a 272 intanke 266 exhaust with the .465 lift, not sure about the LSA. Sounds like you should have fun with this build.

That is a really good idea, and I will eventually do so.

When I go, where do you guys think I should shift at?
I have no idea how high I should spin this thing.

Almost guaranteed it'll be outta breath by 5500 RPM. I would start by shifting at 5000, and maybe walk up or down 400 RPM to see where it ET's quickest. Hard to say where they degreed the cam or how it's tuned.

Choose the lowest RPM shift point that gives you the quickest ET, since there may be some range of shift points where the ET is about the same.

Not knowing about the internals, I would definitely keep it under 5500, or even 5200 if you're the worrying type.

Also, make sure you have at least 55 psi oil pressure if you want to run it up to 5500. You can stick a washer or two behind the oil pressure relief spring to raise it by 5-10 psi. No need to have any more than 60 psi, so don't go nutz or you might get leaks.

Thanks for the advice Dart270.

I have put my foot in it a couple of times and it shift itself around 4000.
I will put a couple of hundred more miles on it and change the oil before I try to spin it to 5,000. Maybe next month I will take it down the 1/4.
