I've recently developed a rumbling noise from the front end. It sounds like a wheel bearing, but goes away shifting the car in neutral while driving. Comes back after putting it in gear. Makes rumbling noise reving the engine in park and neutral...I'm thinking the TC is shot. I also have to shift in neutral after starting to fill it up so car will move. Trans is also leaking from the pump seal even though I replaced it when Reed and I R and R'ed the engine last December. Transmission shifts fine, both up and down shifts. Opinions?

First thing to check is the trans mount. A bad mount will transmit all kinds of weird noises.

Converter itself should make noise no matter what gear you are in.

I hope thats not my case Greg, but it does tick and click when its idling in all gears...just rumbles above idle. Whats real scary is I have an 80 mile round trip commute!

Well after That happened to me I was able to drive it home 6 miles from work. I was just verry careful as I was unsure if it was a rod or not at the time. Then I took out the tranny and went to a stick anyway!

Reed and I are going to swap in a different transmission tomorrow. That should fix it also!

Don't forget to change the tranny mount when you swap the tranny.
Mine did the same thing, a new mount fixed it.

Before you rip everything apart, do yourself a favour and make sure the converter / flexplate bolts didn't work themself loose. It may be a longshot but you'd be surprised the noise those can make.

When I got to work today, transmission fluid was dripping nice and steady from the front of the housing, which also explained the smoke show going on behind my car and the tranny fluid covering everything from the transmission back. Don't think its the mount.

Ahhh Yes this is true.. We had a 67 coronet that was a slant car - and somebody hottrodded it with a 383 but did a shoddy job connecting the Converter to the flexplate.. When it was all said and done one bolt was loosely holding the whole shebang tother.

We got a now converter and flexplate and 4 bolts and we were good!

Greg- you get a gold star! I'll post pics tomorrow, but the short answer is that the torque converter broke right where the you described. The grinding noise apparently is the broken off section grinding around inside the transmission case. This chunk tore up the front transmission seal making a HUGE leak. The transmission still shifted fin and worked, but ti had that noise and the bad leak.

Me and Eric spent all day today (like 10.5 hours) pulling his transmission, pulling the transmision From my brother's Duster, and reinstalling the Duster transmission into Eric's Satellite. Before the tranny went in, I did a couple tweaks to ut- I removed the accumulator spring and I backed out the line pressure screw. This should firm up the shifts and raise the shift points slightly.

I will post some pics tomorrow. Right now I'm pooped and Eric is on his way back north on I-5 on the maiden voyage of the new tranny. Phew...

The Duster tranny seems to be working good though. I am still waiting to hear back frmo Eric about the drive home.

Had that happen on my '75 DartSport except both ears cracked off...

Just got a PM from Eric saying that his drive home was "an adventure." Not sure if that is good or bad, hopefully nothing fell apart or broke or sprung a leak. So maybe the saga continues....
