I picked up an 8 1/4 rear with a sure grip and 3.21 gears today. It's out of a '74 dart sport. Perhaps these questions are better suited for the brakes forum, but here goes. Are the parking brake cables likely to be usable in my '70 dart? Are new 10" backer plates available? Are the studs that hold the backer plates on swaged in place? Lastly, what would you lot recommend I use for gear oil with the sure grip?

Thanks in advance,

Nat

If memory serves at least one parking brake cable (right side) is different. The originals from the car can be swapped over if you have them and they are serviceable.

Just about any 10" backing plates from a big bolt pattern rear end can be used.

The studs that hold the backing plate are serrated and pressed into the axle housing like a wheel stud in an axle or hub only smaller. You can knock them out if you have to. What's the issue here?

Use any 80W-90 GL5 or similar that is made for limited slip rear ends. If not specifically formulated for limited slip use then you need a bottle of the additive if you experience chatter when cornering. I like Redline lubricants even though they are expensive and you won't need any additive either.

The studs are rusty as all get-out. I'm anticipating potential problems so I can have the bits on hand to fix them if something goes horribly wrong.

I inspected the gears (the fellow was kind enough to pull the rear cover for me when I got there to pick it up.) It hasn't been used in years, but they seemed to be in good nick. There was however a very small amount of surface rust on the ring gear. Does anyone see this as a problem? I can probably post some pics later this week if necessary.

Thanks,

Nat

You can knock those rusty studs out and knock in some decent ones. No drill required. A little surface rust is usually OK as long as there isn't any pitting.

If you need new bolts (they also have a flat on the head), I'm not sure where to get them. Mopar discontinued them a long time ago. I have been using a Ford part EOTZ-3C140-A (these also fit the 8 3/4 housing to mount the pumpkin). Ford has discontinued these, also, but there are some still in the pipeline.

If the 7 1/4 is big bolt pattern they will.

As far as the gear oil goes, Once I have it all buttoned up, I pull the plug on the side and fill it to the bottom of the fill hole, right?

Thanks again,

Nat

Ok. Next question; How do I pull the axles out of this 8¼sure grip rear? I've had the back cover off and I can't see how to get the c-clips off (can't even see the things). The instructions I have say to remove the counter shaft, push the axles inwards and remove the clips (bear in mind these instructions are for an open rear). How do I get the counter shaft out?

Thanks,

Nat

Ok. Figured it out. not as worrisome as I thought it would be. Next stop, new axle bearings, seals, backing plates and paint. What colour do you fellas think I should go with? I'm thinking flat black because it's faster.

Thanks,

Nat

My default for parts is low gloss black, sometimes called "hot rod black".
Because it's cheap, easy to match, and easy to retouch. Unless I have a specific reason to use something else, that's it.

On to the axle bearings; is there any other way to get them out besides a slide hammer? Also, does anyone have a PN# for the backing plate studs?

Thanks,

Nat
