This system seems to be perfect for someone thats just looking for simple starting (for wife or girlfriend) and simple no nonsense driveabilitly with crisp throttle response.
Has anyone heard anything bad about this system? For about $1800 its complete with fuel pump, less return line.

Do most aftermarket EFI systems "self learn" to some degree?

Many of them do not, or they only learn under certain circumstances. All factory EFI systems made since about 1990 (and many back to the mid 80s) self learn.

I have heard of that setup - some positive rumblings, but not much news from who I hang with directly.

That is a reasonable price if it does what they say.

It may self-learn the main map, but what about cold start enrichment and all the rest?

In a case such as this it doesn't matter if the EFI system self-learns, because other critical components in the vehicle/road/driver system don't.

Actually having been down the EFI road and working with a FAST that is going on the 416 stroker, I can say this:
Mega squirt was frustrating, but I can honestly say I've learned a lot. It is not self learning, but does have software that does A LOT of the brute work for you. Once you get here close you turn on the EGO correction and it will hold a perfect 14.7 if you within let's say 5%. Than once you go to boost you can tell it to hold 13.6 AFR, or put it on a diesel or a wankel (God forbid). :wink:
Though frustrating we are now talented enough to put this system on any slant six we build. We have >$500 in the whole project including a pre-built Megasquirt minus some modifcations for the HEI.
So what does FAST have? Well, they told us they will build the computer and have a pre-program in it to get your engine started. Than we can datalog some points, send it back in and have them tweak the computer. The "self learning" is probably the same as the autotune in Megasquirt; slow and you need to be again in the 5% to make it work. Note: I do not know that last sentence to be fact, this is a guess based on my experience with Megasquirt and the Haltech they use on the OSU car.
So, essentially is the FAST better than the Megasquirt, I don't believe so. However, what you are doing is paying for someone else to do the learning, work, and part collection for you. If this is what you want, than the FAST if fine. If I'm making $90k and having someone else build my stroker the FAST would logically make sense, if your a poor college student, than I got some time to read (no, not really). This is my intial review, maybe Greg or Pierre can chime in.

I have half a million miles invested in modified self learning TBI vehicles. Granted we are talking about a sbc.

No matter what system you use (I use a Delphi 747 with a custom chip) you have to be right on the money with your basic tune. It dosn t matter if its a carb or EFI you have to have your initial timing (valve and ignition), idle air control and fuel pressure very close before self learning becomes a positive feature.

Self learning at times has to be taught.

Delphi 747 are supposed to start with a base tune fuel pressure and base ignition at TDC. They learn from there.
In order to get my big hydraulic roller (270 dur), vortec head work truck to tune correctly I have to set final advance at cruise and let it work from there.

Self learning can leave you a long way from a good tune if a sensor fails. The puter goes back to the default tune....which is your base tune. If the base tune is good thats not a problem........

Every time you disconnect the battery it must self learn again......that alone will make you appreciate a good base tune.

It will start and idle nicely only if the base tune is perfect.

Thats what FAST does for you. Thats where its different from a $100 747 Delphi with Rochester 220.....

FAST offers to do some datalogging for you as well. Not only do I think they will do a lot of grunt work for you, but they can give you a great starting place. The only problem is, if you want to tweak it like... a 100 shot of nitrous you have to take it to someone or FAST to get it tweaked. Not to mention they can mess it up too.
I think the conclusion from this thread is going to be: Self-learning has it's parameters, not to mention it's limitations. The megasquirt and FAST are very comparable, it just matters who you want to pay to do the work.

A little update on the FAST EZEFI system. Its pretty good. Not taking in to account the fuel pump and return line running, it took about 3 hours to install and get driving down the road. Very easy system to use. I do have a little EFI experience and that may have helped a bit with the basic concepts of how EFI works.
It was a little choppy on my first drive and a little low on power, but each time I get in and drive it gets better and better. Cold starting is much smoother today than it was yesterday. One thing thats great is that if the battery is disconnected the revised base map is not lost. At key off plus 10 seconds the learned map is stored. Pretty cool. Also Air fuel targets (idle, cruise, WOT), Accel fuel, idle rpm, ect can be changed at will by just using the hand held link.
I think this system would be great for people that want EFI without a ton of programming. (This system uses a wide band O2 for feed back) It is not recommended for turbo or Nitrous setups. Total cost from start to finish, $2440. (FAST EZEFI system, fuel pump, regulator, fuel filters, line, hose, AN fittings, clamps, wiring, relay)
