hey guys, one of my friends here in indy just picked up a 64 lincoln continental (suicide doors, pretty good shape) and that was pretty much the last kick for my slant addiction, im planning on going home and bringing the dart back here within the next few weeks, it currently has a 225 from a 74 valiant in it, have already put on a super six w 2.25 exhaust and glasspack, and done the hei ignition, im thinking i would like to do one more little thng, ideally that would up the power and mpg (since ill be driving it across town...) what would be the best investment that way? i have a limited budget, starting my new pt job should cover the extra insurance (have to keep the other insured as i still owe on it) and lower economy (compared to my stratus) what about a cam? i remember an article on here about how to swap it with the engine still in the car, i havent really done much in the way of internal engine stuff besides head gasket, replacing bent push rods and cleaning lifters when i first got it. is a 67 dart gt one of the ones you can swap cams on in car? would a cam be the right way to go? waiting to hear back on insurance for it and gotta look into registration etc as it registered in illinois right now. thanks!

You have done the basics. The next cheapest thing i woudl recommend would be to pull the head, CC the chambers, and mill it to increase compression. If that is beyond you right now, a distributor recurve is pretty cheap and easy.

Dont your parents still live in IL???? that would keep you from having to re register and swap the title over to Indiana, etc which should save you some$$$$$$ at least for now. Is your car current in IL? You don't need the card they send you in the mail to buy another sticker just the license plate number. but if it's over a month past due, maybe registering it in IN would be cheaper since IL added the extra $20 "gouge tax", for being overdue.

What distributor (exactly) are you using? Depending on that answer, you may be able to find a great deal of performance and economy with a distributor re-curve (or a $75 new #3874714 distributor which already has a good curve on it right out of the box).

Even cheaper and easier: tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread.

Okay, it's now a 2-door (non-suicide), but ...

Back to your regularly scheduled Slant thread ...

I will call and get you a quote this afternoon. Shouldn't be too bad. We could pull the head at my place, the machine shop is a couple of blocks away.

Degrease and magnaflux $25. Mill up to 30 thou $40. Mill up to 100 thousandths $75. Remember to include gaskets in your budget. Also I am almost sure that intake/exhaust bolts will have to be removed before milling. How much you mill will be determined by finding your current static compression ratio - which I can help you with. What is your target compression ratio? 8.5/9 to 1? Did I forget anything guys? Thanks, Wayne.

thats not too bad, any chance you have the tools and know how to port and polish the head/match the ports to the manifolds? im not very smart about compression, in the words of ricky bobby, 'i want to go fast!' but i also would like decent mpg

Andy, port work is hand work. Hand crafted. I have watched it done. Have not done it myself. It is much more expensive than milling the head. Set your budget and goals and I will help.
