well i got this msd6a from a buddy who didnt need it anymore
and i thought id put it on and see if it helped any

well ive looked at the msd instructions per their website and hooked up everything correctly
but i get no fire
everything has and is getting power but no fire
but i can put everything back to stock and boom it starts right up

i know most would say dont fool with it but im one to not leave well enough alone....plus its giving me something to do

is there anything not in their instructions i have to do?
i just looked at the wiring diagram and went from that?

Did you test the box by grounding the white wire? It's in the instructions.

im gonna try that...i tested it the other way and worked but now im just gonna recheck it all

should i have used the white wire and not the magnetic pickup wires?

the msd doesnt seem to have any spark....bummer
well i guess that means stock will have to do

If the MSD has power to it's battery connections and the small red wire then tapping the white wire to ground will fire the coil. If not you have a problem with the box.

I think you're giving up too easily. Although it happens, it's pretty rare that an MSD box goes bad. Are you using points or electronic disty? Are you using the required spiral wound plug wires? More info will help us help you.

I just finished the repair of an old MSD-7 box today. They can and do go bad from time to time. On this unit the two large power transistors mounted to the case had shorted base to collector junctions which cooked the 10 ohm resistors across each base-emitter junction. Battery + is fed to the emitter through a transformer winding and the collector is grounded so full battery voltage was being dropped across the resistor. 1.2 amps at 12V is 14.4 watts through the little 1/2 watt resistors which turned them completely black and burned them open.

The purpose of spiral core plug wires is to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can cause false triggering. Solid core wires radiate lots of EMI, but will not prevent the box from delivering a spark.

I don't know if it would make it act like no spark, but MSD's documentation states that you must use spiral wound spark plug wires. You might want to contact MSD and ask them about it. I've always run those, so I can't tell you what happens without them.

MSD is covering their a** about radiated RF signal. And you should use magnetic suppression wire with ANY aftermarket ignition system.

I ran solid wire, back in the 70's, with the MSD Josh just repaired for me. It caused no problem with the MSD, but my wife could tell I would be coming through the door very shortly, by the interference on the TV (used an antenna).
