I am running a 2.25" Thrush Welded Muffler that looks like the FM 60 inside similar to the FM 40. I have 2.25" head pipe all the way back. It has a nice growl at idle but too loud and sings a nice song all the way up to 90. For the price it is not bad, $29.00 from Summit racing. At 60 mph, 2500 rpm it is not loud.

I tried putting a resonator behind it for a few months as an experiment. It got very loud at 60 to 65, quiet above and below. Took the resonator off and the 60 mph resonance went away.

Ted

I would think then that the Flowmaster 50 would be quieter still. Perhaps that is just what I will do.

Although now that I'm getting the car running well on HEI, the carb tuned, the rockers set to spec I can now here what I believe to be my timing chain (not sure its timing chain) clacking away a couple of times a second at idle and just above idle when softly revved. The timing as shown by the timing light tonight was less stable then it was when I first started this tune up a few months ago. Now with the light on the mark it moves 2 or 3 degrees. I have not pulled the dizzy cap and checked for play in the rotor when turning over the engine but thats coming soon enough. I'm still trying to read up on it but that may put the 2.25 exhaust on the back burner...

How many miles do you think your car has on it?

No way to know Ted. I'd guess somewhere between 175 and 200k, however I would not be surprised if 275 to 300k.

I'll have to ask my friend Kris down in Vegas if he knows anything any closer than that.

The speedo said 78k when I pulled it out to jerry rig the wiring. I'm sure from the look of it that it went around at least once.

This has sure taken the wind out of my sails. I was hoping for at least one thing I didn't have to worry so much about with this car however that engine noise pretty much makes this car need a little of everything.

I guess I should be happy that I could finally get the car tuned up and running well enough to hear specific things wrong with it eh? Maybe now I should get the Flowmaster 50 and 2.25 exhaust just so I can't hear my new found clatter

At 355,000 my 1974 SL6 had a little slop but not bad, maybe 2 degrees. It didn't make as much noise as the fuel pump does though. As you know it will run quiet then start wrapping, then quiet again. After I rebuilt the engine I found that a little disconcerting until a mechanic showed me with his stethoscope.
Don't worry about it. Clean up the engine with a quart of Rislone each oil change over the next six months then switch to synthetic. My original engine even though very loose and worn ran the quietest with synthetic oil. Amazing oil for old tired motors.

The FlowMasters have a unique way off amplifying engine exhaust noise. Running my exhaust valves at .022 the last few weeks makes quite an interesting noise in the tail pipe. Maybe some of your sounds will disappear or become magnified. As long as you know what they are, you don't need to worry. However, I think I will re-gap the exhaust valves this weekend to buy a little more high end rpm response. It has enough low end torque. :D

Funny you should mention fuel pump.

Yesterday the car didn't want to start at all. At first I thought that the neighbors kids perhaps got in the car and played with the go peddle. I dismissed it after I got it running.

Today, same thing. I had to pump the peddle while cranking to get it to run, holding the peddle down while cranking as if it had been flooded didn't work. When I first got in and pumped one time then started cranking, I think I could crank for 15 seconds if I let it go that long which I wouldn't without a single fire. This was after my usual 1 pump before I attempt start. It got cold here this last few days so not sure how that is playing into all this. It acted like it wasn't getting enough fuel while at idle and died when I brought the idle up to high idle by hand a few times. Not how it was acting last week by far.

I just checked the choke and it looks good. There is no clatter sound today when running the engine cold for just a minute or so. I did the fuel line mod weeks ago. Filter is new. Tank is full of gas, filled it up yesterday after I got the car running in fact.

I have been telling my wife that the muffler is shot and is plugging up the works, perhaps its that?

Could the fuel pump be draining back? wouldn't it at least fire right off with the first pump thats in the carb even if the pump was empty? This is really strange to me. I better check that the carb isn't leaking fuel right now.

** Edit

Just got back from checking carb. No fuel leaks. Good squirt of fuel from the accel pump. Choke looks perfect. Car drives decent although when the car was not quite fully warmed up I hit the gas quickly and got a small backfire through the air cleaner. First time that has happened since the tune up although I don't usually wing the throttle like that when not fully warmed up. At that time the car was halfway warmed up. Car drives nice once moving cold or not with moderate throttle and once fully warm seems perfect in every way.

Perhaps tomorrow I will try pumping 2 or 3 times then cranking, though I remember reading somewhere here that doing that usually means something else is wrong.

Check your timing, make sure it hasn't slipped!

Checked the timing and it has not moved. I did however find a small hole in my heater hose just starting to weep coolant.

And it just keeps getting better. LOL

I have a heat stove coming in the mail. Perhaps that will help with what I think is the the cold engine having a tendency to go lean even with the choke set to spec. That is my current assumption anyway as I'm still trying to learn the seat of the pants difference between lean and rich when tuning a carb. The plugs look good though with just a hint of cinnamon. Nothing like the plugs full of carbon on 1 and 6 that came out before the tuneup.
