It doesn't have vacuum at idle and has full vacuum when throttle opens. It advances the timing to 30 degrees like it should.
I do have another problem though. On my way home from work yesterday the truck sputtered and shut down. it would crank but no fire. Finally got it to fire and drove it home. Once home it died again and I couldn't get it to fire again. Checked the pickup and there was no signal coming from the NEW dist. Pulled the dist. and spun it by hand to check the pickup and I got a signal. Re-installed the dist. and truck fired. WHY?

Check your drive gear on the Dist. It may be cracked or may have been replaced. If replaced it may not have been put on correctly, you have to drill a new hole in the replacement gear.

The drive gear was fine. I checked that cause I had read that on another thread that it could have a problem. It was fine. Could a module go bad after 10 miles?

I am using my stock lean burn coil. Could that have anything to do with it.

Could be a faulty HEI unit or a faulty pickup in the distributor. I have had new ignition parts be bad right out of the box.

I'm going to get an HEI E coil and another module and see what happens. If those don't work I'm going to make napa warranty the dist.

I'd also check the resistance of the pickup coil and see if it changes when it's heated with a hair dryer.

I don't get any reading from the wires on the dizzy except the resistance tone on my volt/ohm meter when I spin it. Is there any other way to check the resistance on it.

Better meters have a couple of resistance checks. One is actual resistance and the other is usually a voltage drop or continuity check. The resistance measurement generally does not have a tone.

What should the resistances be on the pickup and we're just measuring the pickup coil right. Not what is coming out when it is spun.

Pickup coil resistance is generally 400-600 Ohms. Also, neither lead should be shorted to ground. You are not checking the pickup coil for output so no spinning the reluctor.

It was the pickup coil. As soon as it saw heat it went open, then as soon as it cooled 400 ohms. I put my old dizzy on till Napa can get me another one. Finished the HEI swap by putting the HEI E coil on the fender and everything works great. Just a little sluggish without vacuum advance. I don't belive my lean burn comp was advancing the timing either. Before the pickup went bad I had more power from the vacuum advance than I ever had. Now without vacuum advance it has about as power as before or a little more with the HEI. Thanks. Love the site.

Glad you found the problem.

The lean burn distributor has no advance mechanism at all. No mechanical or vacuum advance. You can get an NOS Chrysler electronic distributor from Old Car Parts Northwest. It may be a little more money, but it's new and never run through the reman wringer.
