I'm installing a slant 6 in a 49 power wagon to replace the 230 flathead. The slant 6 is out of a 70 dart. I will be putting a 2 barrel intake and carb on it and will go with a single Dutra dual. What would be good cam specs for torque in this application? The truck has the stock 5.83 gears, np200 transfer case, Np435 four speed, stock 9x16 tires about 35" tall. I'm just looking for more power and torque than the 230 without going to the 318.

Are you going to check and maybe increase the compression ratio? If not you'll have to stay small like the '71 and later stock cam or something like Oregon Cam Grinding #125 which is 212/206° @ .050" lift, 238/236° at .030" lift, 109° lobe centerline, .416"/.399" lift. Even better would be a custom cam from Oregon with the #819 intake lobe and #818 exhaust. That would be 219/212°@ .050, 248/240 @ .020", .437/.431" lift. I'd have it ground 4° advanced on a 108° lobe centerline. I'd want to make sure you're at 8.5:1 compression ratio for that cam.

Wow...I can't make a cam suggestion but with the depth of gears you have in that truck perhaps you should go with the cam Joshie suggested and give it a try. You have a chunk of torque multiplication going for you with 5.83 gears...

The Erson 254 from the group buy sticky wouldn't be bad either. It provides plenty of low end grunt. Again, order with 4 degrees advance ground in. I have been running it the past few years in my Dart with 2.76 gears in a 8 3/4 and a Auburn Posi.

You can also have your existing cam reground for about the fourth to half the cost of a new cam. That way you can use your stock push rods after milling the head (to get some more torque). It saves you from having to buy a new set of shorter push rods.

Thanks for the input, guys. Where can I find the stock cam specs to compare with the ones suggested? I wasn't planning on any machine work, the engine was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago, just thinking about some easy mods. I will have to learn more about when the shorter push rods would be needed also. It will be awhile before the slant gets back into the power wagon.

tlrol, it is one slow machine in first gear and low on the transfer case. 6.68 1st gear, 1.96 transfer case, and the 5.83's. 4.89's were the only other rear choice.

Click on "Home"and go to articles section for stock cam info. I believe it is in the parts section for racing. Click on the 2nd SL6 racing manual, and scroll to page 17 for stock specs.
