I've got my car running. Here is one of the few problems I am trying to sort out. When I fill the gas tank the fuel gage reads full. When I drive it about 40 miles or so it drops down to about half to 1/4 tank. I was worried that it may be leaking so I filled it up and it only took about 2 gal. of gas. So my thoughts are the sending unit is bad the gage is bad or perhaps the sending unit is not grounded...

Any thoughts appreciated....If it's the sending unit any recommendations on a brand or where to get a good quality one.

sounds like a bad spot on your sending unit, the way i've tested them before is to pull the sending unit, leave the wire on it and ground the sending unit,(i've used a jumper cable from sending unit to frame) move the float up and down real slow and watch your gas gauge (make sure your ignition switch is on)

Your sending unit float is causing the false readings if your only adding around 2 gallons of gas. The float has some gas in it and is sinking. Very cheap and easy fix. Take a look at it before buying a sending unit.

Brian, just curious, if the float was leaking wouldn't it sink and stay sunk?

not necessarily. If the float is partially filled, it can be at neutral bouyancy and move up and down in the fuel tank, giving false readings. It's certainly worth checking.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

I've seen the tank ground strap break and still have the gauge work off & on... double check that the ground is excellent.
