well we did get my car running and it was doing pretty good, today though it started to act like it would die when i tried to take off unless i fluttered the pedal. the carburetor is in good shape and all my plug wires are connected and in the right order, new coil etc.. im confused to what would start to cause this after running just fine before hand?

Check for vacuum leaks? Dirt in carb? Bad accelerator pump?

Before I spent a couple of hours really getting it cleaned up and working right my choke stove housing and rod would hang up either due to rust, lack of proper adjustment or the rod being bent improperly in such a way that it would hang up on the stove housing when moved through its full travel.

If every new day is a mixed bag I would put checking that choke at the top of my to do list.

Good luck!

well ill have to double check it but, when i was looking it was moving correctly and the internal pieces weren't gummed up. but im going to open it up and go through it completely and most likely replace it anyways.

I'm having a similar issue with my wife's pick up, based on the issues you're describing and what I'm dealing with I have to agree with it being an association of the accelerator pump and/or vacuum leak.

I don't remember if the vac advance will flex the pickup wires or not, but try unhooking the vacuum holes from the vac can and plug it. If problem goes away than a wire is likely broken inside the distributor leading to the pickup. This hesitation symptom is usually repeated over and over while light to medium accelerating.

the problem wound up being that it was clogged were the metering valve allowed fuel to squirt into the carburetor with what looked like old RTV. the reason it was there i remember is because way back when i started having issues with it starting i had the carb bowl off and didnt have a cork gasket so i used rtv instead..seems to have come back to get me even though i let it set up for a day in advance. anyway im back on the road. drove it over to duster idiots house tonight and snagged a crank pulley bolt that i was missing (thanks again D.I you rule). thanks for all suggestions/help once again

Every time I see someone with your same carburetor problems I think of RTV. It haunts me.

I did that same awful thing one time on a Holley 4bbl. I almost junked the truck before I figured out what was wrong with it. It took months. Carburetor cleaner just makes it bigger. One good thing: it’s the best way to learn that goo in a tube and carburetors don’t mix. I doubt either of us will ever do it again!

i hear ya there, i will never mention rtv around my carburetor again! i wound up using a sewing needle to push it through, and the throttle pump started pushing fuel like nobody's business. glad to hear you figured that out instead of getting rid of your vehicle. my valiant is my favorite car. it was sitting for about 5 almost 6 months before i managed to find out what the problem was. but it was worth it to keep it. gas prices are rising again and it came back to life right when i needed it :) good ol slant.

I've been having a similar problem with my slant. When I accelerate, it acts like it wants to die. When idling in gear, it has a rough idle. I sprayed some brake parts cleaner around the adapter plate for the carb, and the idle went up. So, in my case it looks like a vacuum leak.
I'm glad that you got yours figured out.

Thanks for getting back to us with the cause. I had no idea that RTV should not be used on the carb. I have not used RTV on the carb myself, however given enough time and not having known this I might have done the same myself.
