Wire gapper. L or loops are fine.

I have one of the keychain ones- its like a medallion with a ramp cut into the side. The problem is that even cheap champion plugs use harder metal than this thing. The chrome is all flaked off it and there is a trench around .040-.050 from gapping thereabouts. I really only get a ballpark gap. I have seen this style done well in a plain not chrome metal (aluminum?) mine is probably pot metal left over from recalled taiwanese toys...

How are the ones with the loops of feeler wire? they look like they would work better?

Definitely use a gapper with round wires, not a ramp-type unit and not flat feeler gauges. Ramps and flats can get spark plugs into the general ballpark, but only a round wire gapper gets them right.

Im with you. I had used flat or round dial for years and thought all was well. Then a friend showed me his round wire loop tool. I gaped he checked there was .004 difference minuim. Made a believer out of me.

I have an old Chapion wire gapper. It won't go .045 for the newer hotter ignitions. It has a "point file." and bend bar.

Just remember that spark plugs with tiny bits of platinum on the electrodes are not easy to regap. Its easy to damage the platinum.
