just wondering what you guys are running for stall speeds on torque converters for best jump off the line. i have 225 .30 over, port polish head v8 valves, 650 edelbrock, comp .502 lift 286 duration cam, clifford headers, 3.55 gears. i have a tci breakaway 2400 in now but its very dawgy off the line. i also know that on highway i'm crusing at like 2600-3100 rpm. what do you guys recommend

I always like to use a lot of stall speed. I've run 3000 with a stock motor and 3800 with a good one. Mild motor like yours should do well with 3000-3300. Call any decent converter company and get one matched to your combo. Off the shelf converters are usually rated for a V-8 application, not a Slant.

You're going to need something a lot higher stall and to keep it efficient it will need to be smaller in diameter. 9.5" converters seem to be popular for Torqueflites. I would not buy a converter advertised to be 3000 stall in the stock 11" shell. An 11" converter will be considerably cheaper, but the efficiency and performance will be poor. Coan, Dynamic, PTC and others can all build you a good custom converter, but be prepared to spend $400-600 to get something worth a darn.

I vote for a true 3000 stall in 9.5" or 10" diameter. I and others have had good luck with PTC and Midwest Converters for the Slant. Call them and give them your motor specs and they will design it just for your engine ~$450 shipped.

I have a PTC 11"street converter in mine.It was rated at 2,800 stall with a v-8 and stalls at 2,400 with my mild s/6.Dustertech,have you checked the actual stall speed of your combo?

my rated stall speed is 1700 and my powerbraking rpm is like 1500. i didnt realize when i ordered my converter that a stock slant was 1800 so i got a tci that advertised for a little higher than stock but that must have been for v8. hows your slant take off with ur converter.

see my car is very dawgy off the line and if i try to power brake it WILL NOT BRAKE THE TIRES LOOSE. last time i dynoed i was at 230 rwhp and 260 lb torque so i think the converter is messing me up.

that number was spraying nitrous. i think my motor number was 230s torque and 198 horse, at the wheels. but that was with crappy mopar performance headers that had like 3 tubes almost 50% blocked due to them wrapping around the steering box, an original cast two barrel intake with a 4 barrel adapter plate and a mopar perfomance .464 lift cam.

so hopefully now after spending some more money and having learned alot about motors than when i built it the first time around i'm hoping to see all motor 220 horse 255 torque and then spraying 250 horse 300 torque. i'm going to be going to dyno either in like 2 weeks or mid september. i will post numbers and some pics. pry have video i'll put on youtube

yeah i know but i think i'm going to go for a 3000 because thats the rpm i'm cruzing at at 60 and i do a lot of long distance car shows. so i dont want to burn the converter up, i want to make sure its not slipping while i'm cruising.

Be sure to run a pretty decent sized tranny cooler with a high stall.

Are you running valves from a 318?

At part throttle the converter will be locked up anyway.

the valves that i'm running are 360 valves from mopar performance with dual valve springs.

from what others said i gathered that the stall speed should be considered at cruising speed so that it wasnt slipping. so if at cruising speed if your at part throttle it wont matter???

i do have a good size tranny cooler because i already blew up one tranny. welded all the clutches to the drums. i put v8 internals back in the tranny but i'm looking for a good core right now cuz it still slips into 3rd. i think the case has warped. i rebuilt it with complete kits 4 times in one week with my brother in law who is the local chryler transmission tech. but has never been right.
