Well, got up this early this morning to finally fire up my first Slant build. I had the guy that did the block work stop by to look over my shoulder.

We got the motor to fire up, but we were not building any oil pressure. We shut it down right away. Tried again very briefly, no pressure.

Pulled the distibutor and oil pump. Found ALL the teeth sheared off the pump gear, and the teeth on the cam drive gear damaged. Distributor gear was fine.

I didn't notice any physical interferences when I installed the oil pump, and when I turned the motor by hand to lash the valves I didn't feel anything odd.

We are going to pull the motor this week and investigate more, but does anyone have any idea what would cause such an event?

Thanks for any and all input.

Can you turn the oil pump by hand?
Might be a defective pump.

Yea, the oil pump is my first suspect. It spun freely when I installed it, but I have to lift the motor to get the pump all the way out and check it. Too frustrated this morning to mess with lifting the motor out.

I did back the pump out of the block about an inch, though. I took the cover off and tried to turn the shaft with my fingertips. Seemed tight, but could have just been my lack of leverage in the tight space.

Either way a new pump and cam will be needed. Hopefully nothing else was damaged.

Thanks!

Make sure to take the motor out and pull the pan to get all the shrapnel out. You'll be glad you did when you see what's in there.

It's odd that it would shell all the teeth off the pump gear. If the pump locked up it usually only takes them off one side.

I lost one a few years ago from a Mopar cam that had the gear hobbed at the wrong angle it seemed. It just plain wore all of them out until 2 snapped off.

Yea, were going pull the motor and get it back out to the shop to clean out the bits. I think I'm going to install the next oil pump before I close up the pan and check to see how the teeth are meshing.

For Info purposes: What cam (manufacture) How old? What oil pump? Did you fill the pump with Vasalene or soak it in oil before start up? What springs do you have?
Please give us some more info.
Thanks,
Frank

Here's the run down:

Cam: Erson 266int/254ex - from the initial group buy

Oil Pump: Name brand NOS. Can't remember which brand, though, but it was an aluminum cast 6 bolt I picked up about a year ago...either from e-bay or a show/swap meet.

Springs: new Comp Cams springs for a F**d inline 6 rated at 91 lbs with my spring height. I'd have to look up the number.

I did pack the oil pump with vaseline before start up, but didn't soak it in oil.

Hum
I havent seen an Aluminum replacement pump. All I have seen are cast iron or stamped steel.
Dont see anything that stands out.

Well, found the culprit to my dissappointing weekend. Finally lifted the motor and pulled the oil pump completely out. Wouldn't spin

With the pump cover off, it spins. But, if you put the pump cover on and just tighten the bolts finger tight, it's seized.

My apologies...I thought that it was an aftermarket oil pump, but it is actually a Mopar pump. Though, I now suspect that the cover may not be correct for the pump body. The funny thing is, the body is cast aluminum with the pentastar and P/N 2121678, while the cover is cast iron with the DPCD logo and P/N 2463986. :?:

Anyway...I now have a pain on the wallet side of my arse from the new cam and pump that I'll have to buy, as well as the five quarts of gear tooth Rotella that I dumped tonight. :(

So it goes...
