-edited- 87 D150 Couldn't find the lean burn computer. It turns out it's behind the battery mounted inside the drivers fender.

My lean burn setup in my 87 d150 just took a $$#%
I evaluated my options and I'm gonna go with a points dizzy and msd 6a, cuz that's what I got.

IF it still has the lean burner peeeuuter in the pickup it would most likely be on the air cleaner. Also maybe on the firewall just start following wire bundels till you come to a UGLY black box.I don't do linkys so look up your make/model at RockAutodotcom and there should be a pic of your puter as they sell "rebuilt" units. It's possible it's been removed(if not would be a good time to do so)and no telling whats been cobbled up in the past.Good luck

I don't really think this is learn burn that late in 1987? Mine is like this too (caravan 1987 carb 2.2 with this spark control computer) and this is called spark control computer. If your is USA truck this will be either a regular carb or a carb with fuel valve (PWM control) and this computer also do memory-mappped ignition timing curve based on manifold pressure via this transductor. Igntion trigger is hall-effect in the distributor.

Cheers, Wizard

It was not on the air cleaner housing in `87, it was near the battery. I like the idea of getting rid of the computer and going with the MSD. IIRC, the MSD can be triggered by points, and the points will last a million times longer than they do when points act like points.

I was also concerned about using points as switch to a ingition module. Do they still get fouled without the "cleaning action" as used on stock ignition system?

The info I've gotten over the years is the "LeanBurn" computer was called Electronic Lean Burn (ELB) 2 starting in 1981 thru 1989 was renamed the Electronic Spark Control (ESC) renamed again to Electronic Spark Advance (ESA). Hall effect distributor was used starting in 1988 thru 1991,this info is for full sized vans and should work for full sized pickups as well. When the /6 was replaced with the V-6 in1988 which was equipt with TBI a more involved computer was used the Single Module Engine Controller (SMEC).

So inconsistent. :p Same with caravan over the years on parts.

But go ahead and convert. I'm trying to convert mine to mechanical distributor instead of points, using hall-effect trigger.

From what I have heard and read (not having tried it myself), the points are carrying only a fraction of the load they would normally when they are acting like a trigger for the MSD. So, they last a gazillion times longer. Eventually though, as with all mechanical devices, they will wear out. I would personally prefer an electronic setup, but MSD claims points work also.

When you use the points as a trigger for an electronic ignition, you set the point gap smaller (just big enough to be consistent) as you don't need the dwell control.

The smaller gap lessens the rubbing block wear.
