i bought a 1972 dart slant six.it had a bad gas tank.i replaced the tank,the fuel pump,wires,plugs,inline carb filter,points,plugs,cap,rotor,hoses at the carb and tank.it is a 1 barrel holly.i put a new holly 1 barrel on it also today.the car sat for 14 years in a garage,only 27,000 original miles on it. now my problem.you can set the carb to idle.if it is in park and neutral while setting the mixture,it idles perfect.put in drive or reverse it wants to stall.we sprayed carb fluid on the manifold gasket and found a couple of air leaks.we changed the gasket figuring we could set the carb,it don't work either.in the past the inline carb filter the clear one was plugged,changed it and everything was ok,not now it barely keeps a 1/4" worth of gas it in.this should be at least 1/2 full of gas if not more.i drove it around town after adjusting the car,it wants to stall at every stop sign,i brake and gas it so it don't.go on the open highway it flies,no problem,come to a red light it will stall so i put it in neutral to keep running.what else can we check for,more vaccum leaks,or change the fuel lines.iwe didn't blow out the old gas lines before putting on the new tank,could this be plugged maybe? or do i need to check out leaks somewhere.we have to be missing something simple since all parts are new.please help if you can,i'm about nuts with this problem.i also just found out why my gas doesn't work right,i didn't know you had to set it before installing,which we didn't do,do you know where it would be set at for a 16 gallon tank,or any help on this would be appreciated.

Is this a "NEW" carb or a reman? If its a parts store reman it is most likely defective. See if you can get your old carb back and have it rebuilt. Parts store carbs are usually junk.

Another thought....

Check to see if the float bowl has any water droplets in it. Maybe there was a little water in the fuel line from the tank since it is a low point for it to collect. I would suspect that the fuel line should have been blown out or replaced.
Along with some water it could be full of rust limiting the flow of gas to fill the filter.
The new fuel pump could be full of rust now as well.

Also a miss-adjusted float (too high) can have the same symptoms. Remans can have all kinds of problems. Hopefully you saved your old carb so you can rebuild it. It is not hard to do.

You might want to put in some gas dryer in the tank for insurance.

thanks,i'll try some dry gas and blow out the lines.it had a new reman carb on it for a few months,i put another reman on it yesterday.i'm going to try changing all the vaccumn hoses on top of motor,a few bucks.i was picking mopar brains at a car show today,most figured either the lines or old hoses with leaks.if you hold your hand over the carb,the engine really reves high,take it off it might stall.it could be vaccumn.

it was the distributor that was off.somebody pulled it out and didn't get it right when they put it back in.runs fine now.
