If your looking for something a bit odder, I'm running the stock pie tin from an early 70's Ford LTD wagon that had a 460. It's almost as big around as the engine compartment on my Valiant, and the schnoz points at the blower motor on the fire wall. Works slick! I've had it on my Holleys and the Carter.

Air flow is not a problem, and the air on the distributor side of the engine is pretty cool back there. The next step is to plumb it into the cowl to get really cool air and perhaps a bit more pressure at the high end of the track. Well, if I ever get to 90!

There was some fabrication work to the cold air intake so it could barely clear the valve cover. I run a two inch spacer under the Carter on an Offy.

Great advice, everyone. Thank you so much! I really like the 70s Ford cleaner. Definitely an unusual selection...which is a very good thing for me. You've given me lots to think about.

One back fire and that element is melting down you intake. I think they will stop small birds from getting in.

If I were in your situation, my solution would be closer to CJ's than to the Edelbrock/K&N/Spectre end of the scale. The OEMs faced clearance problems, too — you might want to look at an air cleaner from a late '80s Ford Clown Victoria with the 351/5.8 engine (cop cars) - they had a 4bbl carburetor and a low-profile high-flow ducted thermostatic air cleaner. The thermostatic setup is nice for driveability and MPGs whether the engine is cold or warm.
