i have used atf /kerosene.... one qt to 4 qt oil and only before complete tear down/rebuild....only short light run

This is a fairly old thread but since it's up again maybe a little fat to the fire is in order.
Back in the day Harley Davidson Motor Company recommended kersone to clean out the oil tank.This was before filters of course and the powers that be figured that the kero was solvent like enough to clean the gunk that settled in the tank and yet was oily enough so that any left over would either be obsorbed or flash off whilst running.We're talking Flat/Knuckle/PanHeads and 1960s back plus full roller bearing lower end and lifters.Plus constant loss of the 50-60 or 70wt oil to the chains meant always refreshing the oil level.
