Not a flame here, just an observation:

It really baffles me that there are people eager to rip out the very well engineered, excellent torsion bar front suspension and replace it with coil-over cråpola.

Benevolance,

I am running, and have run a 904 on road courses and dragstrips for quite a while with good success.

I'm interested to hear more about "ultralight cases" and such. Do you mean road courses when you say "track", or dragstrps?

Maybe we should move this to the trans section. I'll start a new topic there.

Thanks,

Lou

The T5 is what I had in mind for the weight reduction and the performance improvement and to get rid of the big drops in rpm typical of the 833OD trans.

The tubular crossmember, rack and pinion and the coil over swap drops another 80 to 100 pounds off the front end I believe. I'd have to verify the numbers to be sure of that. I do love the torsion bar set up, but man are those lower control arms heavy! The T-bars aren't light either!

The ONLY tubular K setup that is streetable is an AlterK-tion from Bill Reilly. Anything else is just not tough enough to use on the street.

If you can't live without one though, I have a new AJE steup I'll sell you.

Just a few comments about lightweight/gas mileage. My 65 Valaint is pretty light . ...3000lbs with a tank of gas and me in it. The 5 speed weighs 15 lbs less than the original 3 speed. I have lightweight wheels , starter , seats, intake, and run a 7.25 rearend. There is no way to lose 800 lbs out of this car and still have it streetable.
The curb weight on the car is supposed to be 2600 lbs,,,in reality it weighs 3000. My car is very light for a street car and my focus has been on performance and mileage. With the 5 speed in OD ,,,,and commuting on a level road at 55mph we have on occasion attained 30 MPG CANADIAN .(Imperial gallon) Given the aerodynamics of an A body this is pretty good. 30 MPG US might be attainable but it would require SPEFI and a car that would be so noisy as to be unliveable.
Losing weight is not as important as aerodynamics,,,,I got an extra 1.5mpg out of my 69 Dart HT by adding a roof spoiler (station wagon deflector mouted to deflect air down the back window) and a trunk spaoiler(Aspen wagon deflector mounted to trunk lip to deflect air in dead area behind trunk) I use snow buildup on the car to detect the high vacuum/drag areas.

Just FYI:

30 miles/gallon Imperial = 25 mpg US.

You might be surprised to here that my mileage improves on my Suburban with a load of poles. I think it fills in the "dead air" area behind the truck.Image

Well Ron...we call them thar pipes... poles. They used to be trees...but we peeled them. They are not part of the Aero package. (They are part of the Arrow package hownever)

The Aero package idea came from the problem of snow filling up the back window and covering the tailights in the winter. I figured if I could fill in the vacuum areas it would stop the snow from piling up on the car. Sure nuff it worked....no more fastback look from 400lbs of snow.

It works for dust too!

Filling the low pressure areas reduces drag....and in Canada we dont dress even our cars with drag. So Im thinking if you had a roof spoiler it would mean you dont have to wear a dress to the banquet.....or get snow on your window,,,or lose a bagel chase.Image

What about making a plate with holes in it the size of the liners, trimming back the aluminum around the liners the depth of the plate, and fabbing some sort of shoulder around the outside of the water jacket? I think Doc machined the tops of the cyls and put rings on them, this would be just going the same way only farther.

Just a wild idea from someone who doesn't know any better...

Worst case for an aluminum block. Clean it up, paint it, put four little feet at the corners, lay a piece of tempered glass on top, and you got a great coffee table.
