Sorry, not really slant related. I am trying to curve the distributer in the 5th Ave, and noticed the governer in the current dist. is a 15. I have an 11R from one of my spare slant distributers. It looks like it may work in a 318, but wanted to know if anybody had any real word experience in this. Just trying to cure some pinging. I am currently running a distributer from an 84 van with a fairly heavy light spring and a short heavy spring, timing set to 10* BTDC. It only pings on slight freeway grades over 65. Fries the tires just off idle..

Offhand, I can't think of a reason why you can't make this swap...as long as you remember to use the reluctor with the right number of teeth for the engine.

I'm with Dan. I'd eyeball the two governors side-by-side and as long as the roll pin for the reluctor is in the right spot and it fits fine otherwise I'd run it.

You say it pings on slight freeway grades. Does it do this without the vacuum advance connected? Does giving it more gas cause it to ping more, less or have no effect? My 318 van would ping less with more throttle in situations like this so I knew the vacuum advance was a bit aggressive.

The vacuum can is \ the first place I'm going to look. Its marked with 11. I'll back off the vacuum advance a half turn at a time to see what happens. I am trying to keep it on the "ragged edge" of pinging for maximum fuel economey. Now if I could just keep my foot out of it.. Thanks for the roll pin suggestion..that escaped me as one thing to look for.

You can swap the governors between any EI distributor, but you have to watch the Big Block ones as they sometimes had 'slanted' slots and regularly were in the R17 range.

You might end up swapping say the late short governor into the dizzy, you can then run more initial...but then you might also have to change your vacc. can to something a bit lighter (8.5R) as the 11X might be too heavy for the smog-in-ator...

Know how I can find a part number for an 8.5R vacuum can?

Eric,

Some thoughts.......
Just change the can, not the arm.
You still want to get 21 mpg or more out of it.
Leave the governor alone...
You could run a little stiffer secondary spring and rotate the spring post in to shorten the throw but,..... I would try a VC 185 or Wells CV 3015 for 8.5 or 9.5 on the arm first. They ran them on trucks were you have allot more wind resistance and drag.

He beat me to it, VC-185 would be a first choice, VC-184 also would be a good choice...

Thanks guys. I'll check my local Napa and see if they can cross reference a CV-185 for me. I backed off the allan screw in the vacuum can yesterday and it eleminated the pinging, but it just didn't "feel" right, like that half turn took a small bit out of my freeway performance (90% of my driving).

Well put it back by cranking up the initial timing. You should be at least 10 degrees with a 318. Sounds like you need more mechanical timing as well on the primary spring, don't change the secondary spring. You want to keep it on there as a limiter.

What is the initial set at now?
What kind of mileage do you get?

I used to drive from Bellingham to Boeing Field in Seattle everyday in the late 70's and the mileage was like clock work 21 mpg, very consistent on an old worn 318 with 268,000 on it...... in a 68 Plymouth Fury III.

Found a VC-185 can localy (18 bucks! ) and put it on today. I set the base timing to 11 BTDC and found some nice steep hills (not hard around here) and luged the engine down..so far no pinging. I'll see tomorrow when I resume my 80 mile commute. Thanks for the input to a non slanted question.
