If you want good electronic ignition the GM HEI system is hard to beat. If you want easy and factory appearing then Standard Motor Products LX101 is a very good ignition module. If you want rev limiting or other features such as cockpit adjustable timing control it's going to cost you.

I would not be concerned about sourcing all your parts from one vendor. As a matter of fact one almost always has to use different vendors to get the best parts. I do not favor Accel for any ignition parts although I did have one of their 300+ ignition systems (it was new in the box for $50) that worked quite well. I've also gotten good service from MSD systems.

I would not buy any electronics from Mopar Performance nor anything house branded.

Why? becouse of performance? Price? Quality?
Let me know your thoughts on this because I was going to use a Mopar Performance recurved distributor along with the Orange box and the chrome coil for my next Slant Six build up.

All the Mopar electronics are Chinese trash, and have been for some years now -- including the orange box. The Mopar Performance distributor has an advance "curve" (really a straight line) totally unsuitable for street use. It just dumps in all the advance immediately off idle. Do the HEI upgrade instead.

Here in my country I have seen a lot of LA318 running on Mopar Performance Electronic Conversion Kit (orange box + recurved distributor) and they are running perfect!!! With that in mind I went to the MP upgrade for the Slant ...

I'll check on the HEI conversion...

My other option was to upgrade to a 6AL multispark ...

I have a link to a listing of available modules from a distributor of Flame-Thrower modules from PerTronix Ignition Systems, complete with cross reference to part numbers from other brands, and on their site is also a complete listing of module applications, it may be of help to find a donor car. This posting may belong in another thread on the HEI subject - I know there are several big ones - can Dan please fix that if he think the same? vintageperformance.com
I need an ignition upgrade myself, my '77 Aspen SuperSix dies suddenly under hard acceleration, and I suspect the problem is related to the ignition rather than fuel starvation. I have started my collection of parts for a switch to HEI by going through loads of old computer stuff to find suitable heat sinks. They're free...

I went back on reading all the post on the HEI conversion and as far as I can think the conversion is mainly for reliability, easy to find quality parts but not so much for performance. I'm I wrong?

On the Mopar Perf. distributor I think that the advance can be changed using different springs to find the best set up. As far as I know the MP distributor puts all the advance at 2000RPM, is this correct?

Other than that I can only think on the Mallory Unilite distributor ($$$) or maybe the Petronix conversion to run electronics ...

The HEI is a good-performing module; it does not change the advance curve however.

The msd is similar to the HEI I think but with the multiple sparking and maybe more juice if you open up the gaps on the plugs some.

It is probably overkill for our application, but if you already have one I think you might like it. I switched to a msd 6a when my lean burn went bad and although I had tons of other problems later I really liked it.

The msd started a little easier, seemed a little smoother in the low mid range and the best thing about it is that I have been fiddling with msd's for a while so hooking it up is super easy- two big wires to the battery, ign hot, and either one or two wire trigger from the distributor (points/EI). Plus I already had one so the price was right.

Not really - they're both upgrades from a normal Chrysler ignition, but the two work in very different ways. The HEI is like a more powerful orange box or a streetable chrome box, while the MSD is a different animal altogether.

I know that the msd is capacitive discharge, and shoots big chunks of power at the coil for each spark, which is totally different from say the hei which just switches on and off to collapse the field in the coil.

What I meant is that for this guy's application the two systems are similar in that they are stand alone boxes that can be wired inbetween the distributor and the coil to turn a distributor signal into a signal that the coil can understand.

I was answering based on the idea that the guy already has an msd and just doesn't want to use it because it doesn't say accel on it. In this context I like these two options because they don't require stock harness connectors and even an idiot like me can wire one up.
