I know this has been talked about more than once but again my search abilities have failed me. In my 62 without changing anything else, what is the right dual master cylinder to use? My original single unit was leaking last year. I got a replacement item on Ebay and it started leaking this summer. It's time to get serious and get a good one.

There's no such a thing as a dual master you can use on your '62 without changing anything else — you'll have to do a bit of replumbing of the lines that run from the master cylinder to the various corners of the car. That's the point of the dual master cylinder, is to separate the front and rear brake hydraulics so a failure in one doesn't take away your entire ability to stop the car.

A good dual master cylinder to use would be a Bendix 11323 (one left @ Rockauto on wholesaler closeout for $30) or a Raybestos MC36221.

If you swap to disk brakes you will need to get a dual MC made for front disk brakes. The Master cylinger for Drum brakes has two equal size chambers while the one for disk brakes has one large and one small chamber. Also note that when you go to do the swap, the front chamber feeds the rear brakes and vice versa.

I gotta ask: If I keep the drum brakes and just do the swap to a dual master cylinder, aside from splitting my front/rear brakes and adding lines, everything else is a bolt up?? Also, why does the front have to go on the back or is that just with a disc swap??

I wish I could tell you for sure. There was some discussion a while back ( 2 years or so ) that the stock pushrod for a 62 will not fit the dual chamber master cylindres. As I recall it was too long. I don't know if or how that was resolved. I am in the midst of installing disk brakes and a dual master on mine so I'm about to find out what needs to be done.

I don't know why the chambers are reversed in the way they feed the seperate brake circuits. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the common failure mode of a dual master cylinder but that's just a guess. It might be totally arbitrary for all I know. With drum brakes the two chambers are more or less equal size so I can't see where it would matter from the standpoint of hydraulics. On a Disk/Drum setup the front chamber is larger and is designed to feed the higher volume of disk brake systems.

*edit* That would be the rear chamber that is larger, not the front.

So, can anyone tell me if my pushrod will work on a dual master cylinder??
If not what do I have to do besides sell the car and get one of the newer ones (65 or newer)????
