I just picked up a QuickTime bellhousing for a SB project that I'm working on but it got me to thinking that they might be the solution for some of the slant six combinations that people are looking for.

QuickTime bellhousings are modular so they have the ability to quickly design new combinations. So if people want a way to bolt up a five speed transmission to a slant six this might be the way to do it. QuickTime currenlty builds V8 bellhousings that fit TKO, T5, TR3550, T56, Muncie, Jerico, Viper, etc. So I'm sure they could built a slant six bell to fit any of the above transmissions.

Andy,

Thanks for the heads up. The one you have pictured looks like it could possibly be drilled for the Slant 6 pattern.

IIRC, the T56 has a substantially different pattern than the T5 (hint, hint).

Well I doubt that anyone is going to want to put a T56 behind a slant six but it would be possible to do it. If I was QuickTime I'd probably focus on a bellhousing for the standard Mopar 4 speed and then one that would work with a T5 and a TKO. It seems like those three options should cover 90% of the market.

I would just do T5 and screw the rest (cheap, easy to build with decent power handling ability).

Yes, I'd probably do the T5 option also but why not provide a Mopar 3 speed/4 speed option as well? I'm sure there are plenty of folks who would like a SFI bellhousing that is 10 lbs lighter than the Lakewood option.

I'd really like a T5 with a 5th gear around .80:1. That would knock 3.55s down to 2.84 for good freeway manners and the 2.95 1st gear would give a nice 10.47:1 starting ratio. Unfortunately the Ford Racing T5s have a .63:1 5th gear which is much too tall and 3.55s would be 2.24:1 overall in 5th. Ford Racing T56s have a .80:1 5th and a .62:1 6th so the RPM drop between 4th and 5th is about halved. The '95-'97 V6 Mustang T5 has gear ratios well suited for a slant with 3.35, 1.93, 1.29, 1 and 0.73, but I'm unsure if the bellhousing is removable, but I think it is. BTW, I chose 3.55s to run my numbers as it was a very good ratio for a fast road course (Portland International Raceway) when I road raced my '66 Dart and is also good for making time on windy roads. :D

Funny, I have a T56 from a Viper and the small block QT bellhousing waiting to go into my Dakota. But since I got the Valiant I've been thinking that maybe the truck can get by a little longer with the NV3500...

Good day to all....just wondering if there is enough interest in the four speed guys in approaching them about a group buy? I would like to have one for sure.
Thanks Derek

Andy,

I WAS trying to hint that I am thinking about a T56 8) , but I guess I was too subtle. As you know, I've had a T5 in my dart for 7 yrs and love it, but an extra gear would always be nice. Have a whole 'nother T5 setup for Project V too.

I agree that just making this for 833 4spd would probably be a decent market, and T5 would probably be the biggest market.

Cheers,

Lou

Well the cool thing about QuickTime's process is that the bellhousing are basically modular. So if people are serious about wanting a slant six bellhousing that fits Mopar/T5/T56/whatever transmissions then all you need to do is drop some letters into the mail and I'm sure they'll take care of you.

Putting a T56 into an early Mopar takes a bunch of work. I think the torsion bar crossmember needs to be removed as well as a bunch of work done on the floor. But if someone is up for that work then the bellhousing shouldn't be a problem.

Part of the upper X has to be removed for the T5 anyway. Yes, more of the floor would have to be cut, but I'm good with a sawzall, an angle grinder, and a wire feed. Can't be much more than you have to remove to get an A500 in there (a lot).

Sounds like a great little business.

or maybe a "universal" bellhousing, with the T-5/T-56/833 bolt patterns, aren't the input shafts all different lengths ? And Which ever I end up choosing, I want a hydraulic clutch setup, screw cables and linkages !!!

All true T5s have removeable bellhousing. There's a T45 which is similar and has an integrated bell, but I think it was put behind 4.6 mustangs only.

With the aftermarket out there for the T5 it's hard to argue against it for a 5-speed as long as you aren't putting more than about 300 ft-lbs of torque through 3rd. Actually I think the G-force gearset can even overcome that limit somewhat.

Speaking of G-force, you can choose your 5th ratio (.59 to . 90) if you go with the synchro gearsets. Buy a junkyard T5 (I paid $50 each for the last WC cores I had) new bearings and G-force gearset and you have a light, smooth shifting box with a huge selection of ratios.

Yep, the input shafts are different lengths. If you look on the QuickTime website you'll see that their bellhousings are different depths depending on which transmission they are adapting too.

I like the idea of a bolt on T5 kit. Just seems to make good sense for the slant six. Although, as Lou has pointed out, it still isn't a bolt in kit due to the floor modifications.

From what I've seen on other forums, the T56 is a lot more work. IIRC the floor hump needs raised by @2" and the upper and lower crossmembers need fabbed/rework. Some T56s also use an electronic speed sensor rather than a gear drive and speedo cable like we are all so familiar with. I've also heard from a cobra kitcar builder friend of mine the T56 shift rails get kinda sloppy after @10kmi. That said, I don't think those points would stop me if I really wanted to do this swap.
