 Post subject: LCA Bushings

I was reviewing the FSM procedure for changing the Lower Control Arm bushings. I have the blunt drift and arbor press to push out the pin but the FSM calls for a 1 3/8 " fine thread tap threaded into the outer shell to aid in pressing it out. Needless to say I don't have such a tap and the prices for one range from around $140.00 and up. Is there an alternative method to remove the outer shell from the LCA?

Welding on the washer and pressing it out is about the cheapest and easiest way to get the job done, and is very effective....

David I have the tap-- send me your address---I'll send it to you----- but you have to return it!!!. Also the key is put the tap in the vise -- not the arm.!!
I actually have 2--- 1 is messed up on the end(ask Menko) --from abuse & the other is new & unused.

I recently removed some using a Dremel tool to cut the shell and then a chisel and punch to finish the job. It wasn't easy, but it worked.

However, if I had it to do again, I'd get the poly bushings that don't require shell removal. After figuring my time and the ridiculous price to have the new ones pressed in, it would have been far cheaper to go with the poly version.

I considered the poly bushings, but there are two drawbacks that turned me off. First, they are notorious for squeaking and I didn't want to deal with that. I suppose the polygraphite type would help that problem but then I come to the second downside.

The bonded rubber bushing helps to locate the LCA and prevent fore and aft movement. The poly bushing just rides in the shell and does nothing to secure the position of the LCA.

I do have a Dremel tool as well as a 1/4" die grinder... I might give that a try. I can press them in myself since I do have a press.

I have used several methods involving die grinders and/or chisels and hammers and sweat. All have worked fine and no problems since. I advise to not over think this.

Yep, I'm a chisler too! :wink: If you have air power you could use an air hammer with a sheet metal chisel, may make things easier.
