Hello I am in the process of rebuilding my 904 - ( First Auto Trans rebuild / Hi Perf upgrade.)

This is most likely overkill for the slant but I want to know how anyway.

1. the rear drum on my trans is a 3 clutch Drum in stock form.

I can stuff 4 clutches in there with a thinner top steel and get the proper clearance needed. - I have an extra 5 clutch drum from another 904 laying on the bench - But it's from a lock up 904 - It looks like the Rear drum (towards the rear of the Case / Car) will swap to a 5 clutch unit even though I am going from a lock up piece to a non lock up setup.

Please provide all your wisdom here 904 Sages.

as always thanks for making the learning process fun and easy.

Greg

I don't have an FSM in front of me and it's been 15 or so years since building a 904 trans, but I recall the rear drum houses the input shaft. If that's the case the drum prolly won't work for you since I think the input splines are be different between the converters (at the drum end as well.). IIRC there are also hydraulic differences between the two styles of transmissions that would preclude their interchangeability. I'll try and dig out some info tonight when I get home.
What year trans are you building anyway?

Thanks James - The 5 clutch is an 81 lockup piece, that I am intending to put in place of a 3 clutch from a 69 Case and internals - All 904 of course.

So after doing a little digging I found that I can switch over to a 5 clutch drum as long as I use both drums from the 5 clutch Trans as the teeth from one drum interlocks into the other with the clutches. also the 5 Clutch drum uses a differnt pump support - Which I have too - no problem there - The catch in my situation is that I am going from a pump and reaction shaft assembly with a lockup to a trans with no lockup - I am not so sure if this will work - any takers?

Greg,

When I did mine, I used the low gear set from a lock up unit but the front half of the trans (drums...etc) were all from a non lock up A999.

Thnaks Charles, Dan and Tom.

I will read up on the everything you wanted to know about 904's

Tom, i am beginning to see how things along the output shaft from the plantiuearies back would work as you described. It does seem that the lockup system did change quite a bit of the hydrulaic archetechure to get the system to work. therefore making many of the parts un interchangeable on the hydrulic side of things.

78 and later 904/998/999 trans have 2.74/1.58 gear sets
Is this true? Do all 78-up 904/998/999 transmission have the wide ratio gearset?

No. It's wrong. First year for the wide-ratio gears in the 904 was 1980, and I am not sure they all got the wide-ratio gears.

You would have to check the FSM for the specific trans and application to see if it is true.

Well I got the drums and clutch packs put togther - The front drum Will use three clutches as before - And the rear Clutch pack will have an extra clutch in it for a total of four - I could not get four clutches in the front drum without using thinner clutches or steels which I do not have at the moment - Now jsut waiting on some bands from A&A and I will be buttoning up this trannny project and start focusing on the motor.
