 Post subject: spark but nothing else

hello i am new to this site i have a sick 225 slant six
its in a 85 dodge D150 i removed the emission junk, replaced lean burn with a points type distributor then up graded points to transistor assisted igniton, and a reman Holley 1920 then ran it for two years then parked it back in July i would occasionally start it up and let it run till warm last week i started it ran it for a wile then the engine slowed a bit and it died and i could not get it to start back up so i let it go for that day, today i tried it again and i couldn't get so much as a backfire out of it the first thing i checked was the spark its sparking checked it with a timing light then i shot some ether in the carburetor and still nothing i am stumped can anybody offer advice

Ran for a bit, sputtered to a stop, and cold weather add up to ice.

If you have spark, but no fuel I would suspect that the E85 has done you in with ice in the fuel system after sitting for six months as Ohio cooled down. One needs to use a fuel conditioner such as Marine Stable, the blue stuff, to keep the fuel dry if the vehicle is going to sit for any length of time.

If you don’t have spark than the usual tests must be performed to determine which component in the ignition circuit is faulty. I would put checking the points for proper gap at the top of the list if still installed.

Bill no points he has a Pertronix. You need to look at the carb/ fuel as Wjar suggests. A little good fuel pored down the carb will work.

E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline. It is for use only in Flexible-Fuel Vehicles; it isn't compatible with fuel systems not built and calibrated for it. I think you might have meant to refer to the ~10% ethanol blended into gasoline (used to be called "gasohol") in many areas of North America. Technically speaking this stuff is "E10" (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline).

While gasohol definitely has its downsides, it does not aggravate fuel line icing; in fact, it staves it off. Remember, all "fuel line antifreeze" additives are just plain alcohol -- either ethanol or isopropanol. Adding more alcohol to fuel already laced with it seldom helps anything.

sorry i should have said starting fluid instead of ether, i haven't used E-85 in the fuel system the ignition isn't pertronix its a Electronic Ignition Module Kit from apogee

If you tried starting fluid it is unlikely you have a fuel problem.

Yup, I meant 10% not 15%... sorry, brain fart.

Say what you want, if this blended gas sits for several months it will cause water problems with the fuel. It has to be fresh, or some kind of stabilizer product needs to be used for extended storage periods.

i checked ignition system and the negative side of the coil had a lose connection tightened that up but i still have nothing checked the timing it was good so i pulled the #1 cylinder wire off put a new plug in it grounded it on the block and all i could get was a yellowish spark i wonder if the bad connection caused the coil to short out inside or if that happened would i get anything out of the coil

If you have a weak yellow spark you are on the right track. The coil could be pooched . Its pretty easy to swap in a coil to check.

Check what kind of spark you get from the coil by pulling the coil wire from the centre of the distributor and grounding it. If your spark is strong and blue your cap rotor and wires are suspect.

Do you still have points in your transistor assisted ignition ?

If you do I would check your dwell . In old points systems you would get a weak yellow spark when the points neded adjustment.

There is a troll pushing a lawnmower following us that sells fresh gas. Thats OK but make sure you get your spark in order.

If your getting a yellowish spark, check the voltage before and after the resistor. It may be bad. Then tell us what you get. Also check it at the coil.
You should be getting at least 6 volts if not more with the key on and the engine not running.
Mine reads 10 volts at the coil and after the resistor. There should be 12 volts going into the resistor from your ignition key switch.
