After seeing the check that fan message along with the other benifits of using a electric fan i have desided to try one. I was wondering what fan i should use. I would like to use one from a junkyard b/c they are cheaper. Also what would be the best way to turn it on/off other than a toggle switch. any advice would help

Find a car with a radiator and engine close to the size of yours. Get the fan(s) and the shroud and enough of the stock wiring to the fan to get the plug and enough wire to splice into.

You will need to figure out a way to mount the electric fan. Many folks cheap out and just use zip ties (me included).

You will also need some good 10-12 gauge wiring, a quality relay, a temperature sensor, a toggle switch, a coolant temp sensor, some means of mounting the coolant temp sensor, and some good terminals.

You want to mount the fan on the same side of the radiator that it was mounted on the vehicle it was removed from. The coolant temp sensor should be mounted in a position where it will measure the temperature of the engine coolant, preferably in the head, but the coolant cleanout plug on the passenger side of the block or the lower radiator hose might work okay too. The fan should be wired so that it is fed directly form the relay. The relay should get power from the coolant temp sensor and the toggle switch, but the toggle switch should be wired independently of the coolant temp sensor so it provides a manual override.

I mount them with an external trans cooler mounting kit. its basically 4 foam rubber pads and 4 things like zip ties but a little different. I also get a thermostatic controller. it has a temp sensor that I just zip tie to the top of the rad core. you can adjust the temp that triggers the fan. I have had great success with a used 16" pusher from a mercedes.

an electric fan from a mid 90's caravan is a nice fit to the stock radiator on my 83 D-150,,single fan with two speeds. The fan assembly from the local pull a part was 15.00.
used an adjustable fan temp switch from Derale,

got mine from a 94 Caravan, it is a sweet fit. Like the set up in the posting I added a switch for manual control of the fan, and it is also on a thermo switch in the head.
my conversion went a few steps further than the one shown in the article, I also moved the Caravan power control module to the truck, So my fan uses the original three relay set up, I have rewired the module so the other relays will power the head lights, hei, elec fuel pump, ac comp.
