Ok here is a good question. I think I know the answer I just want to see what you guys think. The bulbs that illuminate the speedometer, alternator, temp, and fuel gages do not light(they did a couple weeks ago) but all the other lights in the gage cluster work ie; turn signals, high beam, brake, oil, seat belt. The ones that light the heater controls, wiper and light switches all work properly with the head light switch rheostat.
all the bulbs are good(what a PITA that was pulling them).

so the question is what would cause just the gage illumination bulbs not work?

I have to look in the owners manual to see if there is a fuse that my have blown because there is in diagram in the car.

There is a dedicated fuse for the instrument lights.

Check the fuse, and if it's blown, check to make sure your brake lights are working.

The fuse is good and brake lights work. The fuse is position 7 in the fuse block
I think its the circuit board. I wasn't about to attempt to pull both connectors off at 30*f. if the board cracks and I have to replace it I'm totally screwed.

Just what Dan said,, On my 70 Duster when the dash lights quit. it was the fuse for the tail lights. I guess this was the factories way of telling you you have a problem. Now a days the computer lets you know with a lamp out light and or a check engine light. The dodge trucks have a chime also to get your attention.

I'd be checking the instrument cluster circuit board for a broken pin, a broken trace on the board itself or a wire that pushed out of the connector.

I finally took the time to pull the dash all appart again and found a loose pin on the circuit board. I put a drop of solder on the back to hold it in place and a thin strip on the front to make sure the pin was in contact with the board. We have gage cluster lights again!
I was afraid it was like on my Valiant when the copper strip had pealed off of the board. That required a different board this took a little more work but was cheaper.
