I have been doing some reading on the site about valve springs. I about to order a set for my build and have found that the 340 springs are used a lot and read that some people have used Harley Davidson springs. My question is what ones are better. I will be using a Erson 270/280 cam big valve head milled 90 and a four barrel. Thanks guys

Use the springs the big valve vendor recommends.

I used Chev 1.72/1.50 valves, retainers and springs with an Erson 280/270.....YES!

I take it that means that you're satisfied with your build? What else have you done (intake, exhaust, carb)?

Sorry for jacking your thread Sandy.

Its not my thread......

I am very satisfied with the build. DusterIdiot has a very similar build with some personal differences.(my CR 9.5 DI 10.?CR You might be disappointed at my manifolding....its a Super Six with BBD.

I call this build the Ultimate Super 6. Keep in mind light car, low gears and a 5 speed.

Its for sale,,,,,,

Yes, 340 springs should work perfectly with that cam.

Is the outside diameter of the 340 spring the same as the slant 6 spring and if so what is that diameter? I would like to know on a drag only motor if there are better springs to use. Thanks for the info guys

The 340 style spring is slightly larger OD, but fits the stock spring pocket just fine. Yes, there are "better" springs you can use, but you don't need them if you're keeping it under 6k RPM. I'm building a 170 that will be expected to live at 8k RPM so it's getting conical valve springs and tool steel retainers from Comp Cams. The springs are $115 and the retainers are $122 for 12 of each. You can buy 16 340 style springs and retainers for $58 and $49 respectively also from Comp Cams.

Thank you for the info Joshua I have not figured out what RPM I will be turning through the lights yet. I will be milling the head 90 and decking the block 20 maybe more depends on what I want for compression big valves still have not decided on the cam yet. I will also lighten the crank as much as I can and be running race fuel, Strictly a Drag motor...

225s have such a long stroke you have to run good forged pistons and good connecting rods to reliably turn the kind of RPM that gets the valve train in trouble.

My engine will be subjected to 7500+ RPM for over a full minute at a time. Dropping a valve at that RPM is my biggest concern.
