I bought my 5 speed for $125cdn......I could buy 100 5 speeds....

For 12 grand I would expect 7 speeds and a blue job.....daily

For 12K you can buy about 15 T-56's and have enough spares to last you ten years or so.
With the road speed range we actually use and the torque curve of a 225 I think a properly geared 5-speed is just about perfect. We don't really need the ratios that close together and we can't use a super tall overdrive without having to downshift for every little hill. If we had 300+ ft/lbs available around 1600 RPM a second overdrive (6th gear) would make sense, but we don't so...

Racing is another story all together. The 2.66:1 A833 is a really good road race box for a 225, but if you start getting into small, peaky engines more gears closer together are needed.

I like the idea of the "Richmond Street 5 Speed". There are 2 versions.
One is an overdrive (more expensive BTW) and one is a direct drive 5 speed. They can be had with the mopar input shaft like an 833. They are approximately the same size as a T-10 in length. The main case is a bit bigger than a t-10 though the overall length is about the same. The case is made from aluminum so it is lighter than an 833. The price for the standard direct drive is about $2000 and change through summit. You also get three choices of gear sets (a,b,c). The overdrive version is about $4000. That is why I like the directdrive version. You could keep your 2.76 (or similarly lower numerically even) highway gears which are inherently stronger due to the larger diameter of the pinion gear(all else being equal). You still woud have excellent acceleration due to the lower (numerically higher) first gear and have good evenly spaced gear drops at each shift. shifter location is somewhat rearwards from the 833 from what I can tell but the linkage is on the side of the trans like an 833.
.....Oh well, so much for dreaming. I guess the most realistic choice is the Ford style T-5. BTW, they can be had through summit also for $1300 and that is for a new trans. (through Ford racing) Only a few caveats. Only
rated to 330 ft. lbs. of torque and the overdrive ratio is 0.63. That 0.63 ratio means you could run some pretty "steep" gears BUT, think about how fast that driveshaft will be spinning at highway speeds! (this is another reason that I like the Richmond direct 5. (The drive shaft and associated drive line will spin slower at highway speeds.) Any way, sorry to go on and on like this, just my .02 worth. Most of all.....ENJOY!!

I thought this might be of interest to anyone doing a 5 speed swap. Maybe this will inspire someone clever to invent a new solution.

WOW, and again WOW. 'SuperDork' has managed to collect an enormous amount of useful info, and managed to boil it down into one thread in a forum. That link is superb, thanks.

Just an FYI, but it was actually Greg55_99 that did the work, not Fiat22turbo. Greg is on this board (as well as many others) and really does deserve the award. He has amassed a huge amount of info on this and really is the reason I started even looking at the R154 myself.

Sure could use an applause emoticon here. :D

all the R154s that I see now are $700+.

Been on the phone and swapping E mails with quick time the last few days; very helpful I'd definitely suggest them. (though I didnt see any /6 bells listed) :?
