Ive got a new '77 slant six with oversize valves, carter BBD and it works great right now. Oil consumption is about 1 qt per 1000 miles. I was thinking this was a bit high- my engine builder told me to try a new PCV valve. Any particular make/model of valve suggestions? I havent bought one for yrs. thx-

Seriously, a quart every kilomile is too much, but I don't think your PCV valve is causing your oil consumption. Time to do a real leak check. There are many points from which oil can drip while you're driving, without creating a telltale oily mess. The oil pressure sender is one example. You may want to try a closer inspection by cleaning the engine thoroughly with engine degreaser, adding UV-fluorescent dye to the oil, driving for half a tank of fuel, then shining a UV light all over the engine. Even the smallest evidence of a leak will shine brilliant yellow under the UV light. See here and here for more info.

I have had problems with the pcv valves I have bought at the el-cheapo parts stores, where the spring tension was significantly different than the OEM unit I was replacing. The only suitable replacement I have found for my old 4.9L Ford truck have been the Motorcraft units from the dealer. I would stick with NAPA or the OEM.

Actually, I don't think the spring tension is all that critical. What is critical is the size of the orifice inside. This determines the amount of air flow at high vacuum (idle), and will effect engine idle quality as well as crankcase scavaging. The spring will control at what point (intake vacumm) the valve will switch from low flow to high flow (more throttle opening/less intake vacumm).

PS: I don't think parts from NAPA are any better then other parts houses. Most (not all) are made by the same companies, and put in different boxes. Napa used to be better quality then the discount houses, but not any more.
