Ive had a '87 w150 for the past 2 years about. Its got 200k on the slant. Should be more like 400k with it being a x forest service truck and the way its runs. I was gonna buy a motor and just swap it in along with my aluminum 2 brl , header and 38 weber.

Yea right....

Bought good running engine from a buddy outta a '75 dart? I dont remember it was dark and the car ran and drove nice. 8) I brought the engine to work on saturday to degrease it and pull the head so I can mill some off/ do a valve job and port it. That was ok till I kept finding lil things wrong with it.

Valve tips were trashed - sounded like the valves were loose is all
needs some guide work on the exhaust
fuel pump eccentric is got a gouge in it
lifters and cam are worn
needed gaskets

Next thing ya know I had the whole thing in pieces :D So much for a running engine.. Same thing happend to my cummins last summer

The heads about halfway ported on it already, waiting on my SSvalves. I havent decided how much to mill off. Im thinking I'll take most of it off the block and just make the head flat. Try to build some quench into the slant. Only want ~9:1 tho.

Ordered a cam for it - its ~260 advertised - didn't go real wild or what not. I dont remember all the spec's off it.

Today Im gonna order the gaskets/ bearings/ rings. Might get pistons if they are cheap enough - might just do it anyways so I can be lazy and not clean the old stuff. - Would make it lots easier to balance the motor too...

This slant was supposed to turbo project, but a turbo slant will be a HUGE disappointment compared to my 90 cummins for power. The cummins makes 50+ psi of boost and 350+ whp and 700rwtq id estimate. Still need to dyno it. The slant Id be happy with 200hp @ the crank :D

I also like taking most of the compression / milling material off the block, keeping the head thick helps to keep it ridgid and flat.

FYI, you will not be able to get any quench out of a flat top piston SL6 at 9 to 1 compression so don't get "stuck" on that. ( you would need custom "dome/ dish" pistons to do it)

Im gonna have more quench then it did stock :D Still none tho.....

The chamber is gonna be opened up somewhat too. I'll have to cc it to be 100% on how much I can take off everything.

I might even deck the block tonite if can get that far. Might just work on the head and k liner it.

Penty to do till I get my parts.

I do like the factory "balance job" that was done on the pistons I got. They were off a 1/2 gram from heaviest to lightest. Not bad :D

Rods were real close too 5 grams from heavy to lightest.

Still havent touched the crank yet tho.

Ive been doing massive amounts of head work instead.

i did that. bought a low miles 65 /6 though it would be a drop in then found out the crank size thing. so thought i would tear it down and swap cranks. pulled the VC off the 65 rocker arms were clean. yep thought i was doing good. started looking at the cam it looked worn check the lifters they were getting dished. now its all torn apart and i am looking at decking the block and just giving the head a valve job. but what it needs hardened seats 20 a hole. So much for a drop in. now there a local guy has a 85 /6 and tran for sale for 350. do i buy another drop in and end up need to rebuild it. so much for Drop ins

Id just fix what you have. Never know what ur getting with a used motor sometimes - even from a good buddy. No biggie since I hate stock engine anyways.

This way you can mod it and make ur slant more fun. Slant stuff is pretty cheap. I dont think I'll have 500 in mine. Pistons, rings, bearing, gaskets only set me back $230. Cam and lifters ~100 , valves $80.

Performance cams are alot easier to find for the solid lifter slant too

Ditto. If you want to build a motor, buy a spare motor and build it. If you need a daily driver, fix what you have and keep on truckin'.

Been making some decent progress. Heads ready for a valve job.

Tonite I figured out the magic number to surface off the block. 080" to make 9:1 compression. Got .030 taken off so far.

Just have to balance the crank and do some oil modding then maybe put it back together next week sometime.
