I was about to bolt in the last of my suspension upgrades on the beater valiant today, when I came across an oddity...

I had thought that while power steering sector shafts had upsized, I thought Manual Steering was all the same...(1962-1980?)

My 1967 shaft accepts the 1967-1972 pitman arm (the kind that the stud passes through the underside of the steering link...but will not accept the "late" pitman arm (the type that the stud passes through the top of the late "flat link"...)

The late pitman is like a 1/16" too large and the splines wont engage... I pulled out my only spare manual steering box I have from a 1976 Duster...and it fits fine (but the shaft is too big for the 1967-72 pitman arm)...

Was there a sector shaft change in model year 1973? Or is this like the fun we have with "which slip yoke does your A-833OD take?"...

If so it looks like I need to pull the '67 box and save it for an early car, and have firmfeel put some love into the 1976 box...

Thanks for the input,

-D.Idiot

Yeah, all the '72 and earlier A, B and E-body steering boxes manual and power are supposed to be small sector. '73+ power boxes are large sector, but the manual boxes stayed small sector. Could you photograph the top of the box you pulled from the '76 Duster? I'm thinking it's a C-body or B-van box if it fits the large spline pitman arm.

Seems like it must be a big vehicle box, yes.

I think you guys nailed it...

I see that it's getting harder to get a new Manual Steering pitman Arm, thank god Rockauto still has K7075 for $48 (unlike all the other stores in town weighing in at $83-129... OUCH!
