I got tired of my nippondenso starter so close to the rear pipe. It got even closer after exhaust guy tweaked it to straighten out the flange. I was feeling in the mood to spend, so this is what I came up with.

Well, I shouldn't say new. I found it very mildly used on moparts. The RobbMc site is here. The new price is $299. Sometimes he gets returns and rebuilds them selling them at $199 I believe in his "garage sale" section of the site. This is part number 2005. It uses planetary gear reduction (instead of offset gear reduction of the nippondenso) so the output shaft is inline to the motor. The solenoid position is also infinitely variable so you can set it where you please. The solenoid is hard mounted to the motor, but the bracket holding the motor to the trans can swivel to any position. Similar weight to the nippondenso unit - the UPS box itself was marked 9.6 lbs. Made in USA if that tickles your fancy too.

Oh forgot to mention - It does have a proper nose cone to locate the starter in the trans. Whats more is the shaft the gear rides on goes all the way through to the nose. The solenoid just pushes the gear up/down the shaft. This supports the gear on both ends so it won't deflect when torque is applied to it. Very well thought out design.

<unprintable expletive>! That's a Delco PG260. Permanent magnet, planetary gear reduction, knocked off by every Chinese company with varying degrees of success in terms of materials quality and durability.

They're decent enough OEM, with typical Delco underengineering (a major cause of failure is corrosion under the nut that holds the motor lead to the solenoid). I still think the Denso is the best, but if it fits and works...

$299? He's paying around $39 for those starters.

Has made in USA on website. Solenoid is held on by allen screws.. doesn't sound like typical offshore craftsmanship.

I paid more for the rotational ability then anything. Maybe just the bracket part is made/machined in USA? Website does say the brackets are interchangeable and can be ordered separately if you want to turn the starter you have into one for another type of car.

I've seen the proprietor post on various forums and sounds quite knowledgeable about the product. Has a 90 day warranty and a lifetime "repair at half the cost of new". I won't ruffle any feathers and email the guy directly about it but he is sure welcome to comment about country of origin if he sees this here.

Looking more at this thing - I can say the majority of the cost probably is in the brackets. It appears to be 4 pieces.

Looks like one piece is fitted from inside the motor body. Then a ring on the outside of the body. This ring has 4 screws on it. When loosened you can adjust adjust solenoid position, when tightened it clamps the body and first piece together. Third piece attaches the first to the trans. Lastly the support cone.

The sound is closer to the stock starter.

This page has some comparison info. There are different versions of the nippondenso - with or without nosecone, think there was one with a slightly longer body... but that chart should give you a ballpark.
